Reusing Plastic Bags |

With the increase in the amounts of plastic bag usage around the world, plastic is dumped alarmingly at a very high rate. The problem with plastic bag dumping is that plastics takes thousands of years to decompose and therefore are not biodegradable. Some of the hazards of plastic bag dumping are ~It's dumped in the ocean and seas hence killing marine life ~It traps small animals ~It causes poisoning in animals as they try consuming the plastics ~When burnt it releases harmful fumes into the atmosphere To reduced the amount of plastic bags dumped we must follow the 3R's. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. As often as we can, we should avoid buying products with plastic packaging, we should reuse our plastic bags several times instead of using them once and throwing them and lastly we should take them for recycling. My Project To recycle plastic bags, i have been involved in a project for about 2 years now. My project involves recycling plastic bags to make cool stuff! So what we do, is that we gather plastic bags of all shapes and colors. Together with Kibera women's group we cut these plastic bags into thin strips and we weave them into beautiful products such as long lasting bags, wallets, purses, pencil holders etc. 1) Collect 2) Sort in groups of colors 3)Cut into thin strips (About 2cm) 4) Weave 5) Decorate the final product 6) Sell or exhibit. So next time you go to the supermarket or grocery store, please do not throw your plastic bags and instead make use of them!
