Time for action |
---|
Paperazzi, China - an article by Madhav Datt After a long time, I am back writing articles, and the next few articles will be part of a series highlighting commendable small scale initiatives, efforts and activities started by youth from all over the Asia-Pacific Region. I hope this serves as motivation for them to keep us with their work and inspiration for us all to start our own projects and start acting. As we all see a lot of conferences and summits happening all over the world to discuss environmental issues, a large number of youth send time and energy on them. I feel it is now time to stop talking and start acting and so to motivate youth to take action here is the story of friends from Shanghai, China. Here is their project as it was told to me : Seeing the orderless recycling market of China, our project wants to make some change. We want recycling easy, beneficial and enjoyable. To achieve the goal, we developed the Donator Requital System (DRS), in which people give waste and receive products. In light of a successful Tetra-Pak Recycling Campaign and in collaboration with SHforest and Shanghai Roots and Shoots, we initiated a Paper Recycling Campaign in our own school. With the amazing outcome of quarter ton of paper, our DRS is being introduced to all Shanghai R&S member schools. Lectures are planned as part of future development of the project. As small as a scratch-pad we grab to sketch several strokes as great as a poker pyramid that appals and astonishes. Hardly can a proper day be without paper. 350 million tons of paper is annually consumed in China, one-third directly thrown away. Were it recycled, 105 million m3 of wood would be preserved. Two years ago, we initiated a Tetra-Pak Recycling Campaign and attained 2413 Tetra-Paks. In light of the successful experience, we plan to expand the extent of our recycling to paper. Our purpose is to get people into recycling. In China, recycling has already been rooted into every corner however, it tends to be orderless, without proper supervision and coordination, thus not benefitting people as much as it could. Most people consider recycling a business not an obligation. It is true that there ARE people like us who take strong actions to recycle, reuse & reduce, but it is not enough. Only when people find recycling easy and beneficial, will they be more motivated and take an active part in it. To achieve our goal, we designed the ?Donator Requital System? (DRS). Specifically, it is a system in which waste-donors (mainly waste paper at our beginning stage) can get products directly made from their own ?donation?. Now people ?sell? the waste for money with which they consume when they turn to DRS, they can simply jump the process of consumption and immediately get the recycled-paper-made products. We try to use this system to simplify the process of recycling and thereby encourage people to get involved. It has become a regular operation in our school. Students are used to giving us their used paper and receiving recycled-paper-made notebooks in return. If you too are a youth from the Asia Pacific region, and would like your project featured in an article at TUNZA Eco-Generation, feel free to email me at greenthegene@gmail.com |

This is a really great initiative.
Madhav, I am so glad to see you here again :-)
As you pointed out, China is still far from the Green move.
It means there are a lot of grounds we can start up.
