Nationwide Tree Planting Campaign

by | 27-01-2013 07:37 recommendations 0

Trees can be seen as the lungs of the world and by increasing their number the entire Earth will benefit from it. One of the environmental Benefit of trees is their potential to mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon as they grow.

On 15th January, Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating world tree planting day. The UNICEF children climate ambassadors participated in the event and planted over 100 trees. The Ambassadors, in interpreting the theme ?Tree planting for poverty alleviation and economic development? for the 2012/2013 National Tree Planting season, cheerfully noted that forests can alleviate poverty if used sustainably.  Many communities depend on forests for subsistence and income. In fact, forests are considered a critical link in the transition to a green economy – one that promotes sustainable development and poverty alleviation. Trees are our best friends. They play a very important role in our life. We cannot live without them. They give us timber, paper and firewood.

The tree planting campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, was unveiled as one response to the threat of global warming, as well as to the wider sustainability challenges from water supply to biodiversity loss.

    hahaha @ Achmad.
Hey @Christy, yes! a big one actually its getting worse now so with my business we ar pushing for th use of alternative fuel made from sawdust than to have to put more pressure on forest to give fuel wen its already going out of its way giving us timber so i think it will give us a direction wen we start to use the already piling up sawdust to make fuels eco-friendly fuels. for both households and industries.

    thank you thank you @Nuzul @guru @alberta @raja

@thanx Kehkashan @Thanx Datt @Sure Anjali we need to, i personally think that if we are to have an upper hand against climate change we need to secure our forests first make sure the green cover is there.

Hi Generation UN..you write down very informative article.. i love it. I Just wanna correst the statement of your essay telling us: 'Trees can be seen as the lungs of the world'. The research of CIFOR (www.cifor.org)-one of my lectures whio conducted it told that 'there is the big wrong of a view toward forest which is forest is not the lung of world'. The function of lungs (alveoli) are to absorb and inhale O2, whereas the forest role is to absorb CO2 and exhale O2 when phosyntesis was ensuing. Before reading his article i also say that forests are the lung of the world.
