A little about water in Peru

by | 25-03-2013 23:39 recommendations 0

Peru, a country considered among the seven most biodiverse in the world, at the same time one that has a higher rate of deforestation with approximately 150 000 hectares per year.
Peru is more generally divided into three regions: La Selva, la Sierra and la Costa. The three regions are very different but all are rich.
In the Selva we found the Amazon River, which is the largest river in the world and a variety of woods where you can find hundreds of species of flora and fauna between any of them could mention the Bufeo Colorado, a beautiful pink dolphin inhabits the Amazon River basin and is in danger  of extinction because factors such as pollution, habitat loss and by-catch. This region has many protected natural areas  of the country and is one of the largest of Peru, but has the smallest population with 11% of all Peruvians. However it is where there is a greater amount of fresh water available and their average annual rainfall is 3000 to 4000 mm, however has little water infrastructure.

In the SIERRA  also find different types of ecosystems  but the weather is cold and can be up to 6780 meters above sea level approximately. One of the most characteristic species of this area is the Puya Raimondi, belonging to the family of bromeliads. It can live up to 100 years and measure up to 12 meters high, it blooms only once in your life and live more than 3000 meters. This species is endangered because it is threatened by the locals who use it as fuel, food for their animals and building materials.
The region has a lot of water, but less than in the SELVA, its average annual rainfall is 600 mm, although it has little infrastructure, and much of its population is poor, and its institutions for water management are mostly traditional nature. This region inhabited by approximately 36% of the Peruvian population.

The COSTA borders the Pacific Ocean and is the region that has the largest number of people with 53% of the Peruvian population, while being less territory region. On the COSTA is the capital of Peru,  Lima that is  the second largest desert city after Cairo. Part of the Pacific Coast would be a desert if not for the water flowing from the Andes, because Peru has the largest number of the world's tropical glaciers.
Approximately the average annual rainfall is 40 mm and is densely populated but dry, so has large hydraulic infrastructures. However there is an estimated 2 million people in Lima without access to water, as much inequality in its distribution.
Approximately 90% of the water in Peru is used for agriculture and livestock and paradoxically on the COSTA abound crops higher consumption of water as rice and sugarcane. And another important factor is the contamination of water sources by the use of harmful chemicals in agriculture and mining. In addition to problems caused by climate change.

Although the management still has some deficits, in Peru are taking place many programs, activities and campaigns for getting more people access to water and that people who already have it, learn to take care of, is also during this month, hundreds of people in Peru participated in all activities of the world Water Day, which also in Peru was declared ?he month of the water? I hope inform you about these activities the next time.
