Earth Hour India

by | 01-04-2013 04:42 recommendations 0

Earth hour, a commitment to save the world from global warming and environmental degradation, was celebrated all around the globe  on March 23, wherein millions of people  participated by switching off the lights of their establishments and spreading the word around.
In 2004 WWF Australia met with advertising agency Leo burnett to discuss ideas for engaging Australians on the issue of climate change. The idea of a large scale switch off was coined and developed in 2006, originally under the working title  Big Flick. The 2007 Earth Hour was held on 31 March in Sydney.
In October 2007 San Francisco ran its own "Lights Out" program inspired by the Sydney Earth Hour. After their successful event in October, the organisers decided to take the Earth Hour globally.
People around the world express their commitment to preserving the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour on this day. India observed its first Earth Hour in 2009 with people in 56 cities switching off the lights. The movement has been gaining momentum with each passing year and more and more organizations are coming forward in its support.
This year in India in our National capital New Delhi we observed Earth Hour by switching off lights at India Gate, Qutab Minar, Humayun's Tomb, the historic Red Fort, Central Park in Connaught Place and many other buildings.Around 1,000 people gathered at Central Park in Connaught Place at an event organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN).
I too participated inspite of my exams  by switching off the lights and encouraging others to do the  same in my area and also motivating others to switch off the lights through social networking sites
