This month the biggest event organized in Bolivia was Earth Hour. WWF and its Bolivian partner Fundacion Canaru organized a series of events with municipalities, businesses, universities in many parts of Bolivia. According to the information provided by Fundacion Canaru about 10 municipalities partnered for this event, spreading information about it and also organizing activities, more than 20 businesses in the city of La Paz officially compromised to turn off the lights and more than 6 universities helped with the activities and turned off the lights on March 23rd.

Personally, I had the opportunity to participate in the activities organized by the Municipality of La Paz in partnership with the Fundacion Canaru and my university Universidad Catolica Boliviana ?San Pablo?. Starting at 8.00 pm the lights of the July 16th Av. were turned off and about two hundred of candles were lighted. Then at the Bicentenario square, near the July 16th Av. a concert started, first with words of the Municipality and Funfacion Canaru representatives and then about 4 groups animated the night.

Also, between each group, other numbers were presented. For example a group of children danced traditional songs the chorus of the Universidad Catolica Boliviana ?San Pablo? sang two songs there was also a demonstration of music played with quenas (a traditional music instrument). And a lot of people were present and participated in the activities. Something that called my attention was that all the houses near the July 16th Av. were with their lights off, showing a growing support to this kind of activities by people of La Paz.

Since 2009, Fundacion Canaru coordinates the Earth Hour activities in Bolivia. Since that year that organization spreads the word about the Earth Hour and works to involve more organizations and partners in their work. It is great to see that their efforts are showing results because every year more and more people are getting involved in this kind of activities and are starting to think about climate change and its effects. This definitely is A Growing Movement.
