This year in Colombia have been presented several wailing by the coffee and potato sector of the country, which in some ways have become violent. The flow of information within the value chain of agriculture is broken, which is the reason that each part of this chain "pulls" to one side, leaving aside the whole sector development. The coffee in the country have been in decline and that is reflected in production and in contributing to the national economy, after being one of the strongest economies in the country, this sector is losing power.
In Colombia between 1989 and 2011 according to a study by the Bank of the Republic lost 7 percentage points of its participation in global coffee production. Colombia came to provide 16% of total production, but for 2011 came to 6.25%, simultaneously markets like Brasil gaining ground in this sector. For this reason the sector's contribution to the country's economic growth was only 0.6% in the production 2011. The production changed from about 16 million bags of 60 kilograms to 7.7 million bags in 2012.
To get an overview of the stakeholders in the value chain needs to be a relationship between the market and small farmers or guilds. Without this vision is difficult to provide food and economic security to these farmers. Handle this problem is difficult and expensive. Meanwhile countries like Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala double the country's productivity.
The problems that are experienced in agriculture and other fields in the country, is the lack of communication between the actors provide a product. Agricultural value chains looking to improve communication, participation and market performance. The relationship between the supplier, producer, industry, retailers and consumers is the flow of information, the base for management and development of the sector, based on innovation and competitiveness in domestic and international markets.
In conclusion value chains are a tool for the improvement of agriculture in the country, as it is a way to implement a quality management within the processes and parts of the value chain and its members, and that includes information to identify strengths and weaknesses and thus generate plans for improvement, thus ensuring continuous improvement, which not only improves the production cycle but enhances sector strategies and alliances between actors, to ensure the growth of the agricultural market .
