NATURE'S FURY DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

by Neha Swaminathan | 20-06-2013 03:06 recommendations 0

Another fury of the Global warming has been experienced in the torrential rains in north India with floods and landslips. The annual monsoon rains have come early swelling the Ganges, India's longest river.

The tragedy has claimed 131 lives, the worst in recent years in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. More than 73,000 pilgrims around the Himalayan shrines have been stranded in Uttarakhand and about 1,700 tourists in Himachal Pradesh. Seven members of a family died after the hotel they were staying collapsed.

Even some security forces helping in the relief operations have fallen victim to the ferocious floods. More than a dozen helicopters were deployed in the two states for relief and rescue operations. Private choppers have been dropping food supplies to people stuck in various areas.

In Himachal Pradesh even the chief minister who got stuck for 60 hour had to be evacuated. Public Works Department has said  it would take three to four days to clear the roads. In many places like Chandigarh, Dehradun, Dhramshala, Manali, Mukteswar, Nainital etc, the rainfall has exceeded average rainfall of June by more than 50% with Dehradun exceeding mean rainfall by 3 times.

This year?s monsoon has advanced over India at the fastest rate in over half a century.
