Catching water and care for the environment

The ?Atrapanieblas? project grew out of an initiative  by students of the University Network Environmental Peru, that through research can provide data on water problems and dryness of the high places of Lima, and thus find solutions. Should be mentioned that Lima, the capital of Peru, is located on the coast, is one of the most populated areas of Peru, but with less water available.

However, while there is a shortage of rainfall in the Peruvian coast, Lima has a very high humidity reaching 98%, and especially in the hills, because of fog that comes from our sea. So, to take advantage of liquid water fogs from these devices have been devised called "fog catchers". They allow obtaining water by a simple and above all it does not have negative impacts on the environment.

Currently this initiative has spread and is being made on a larger scale projects such as villa in Lomas Mary, who is a district located on the south of Lima, where now you can see metal structures and bamboo about four Six meters covered by a mesh. Below are the channels and pipes, which through a bio-filter fill a tank of 1.100 liters. This is possible because a "fog catchers" can capture five to fifteen liters of water per day.

Water obtained which by the way is very crystalline, is used for growing potatoes, radishes, beets and lettuce, that is, use it to feed their families, especially in the poorest areas, where there is no access to water , but on the other hand according to some studies, one third of the water we provide is wasted, and this is an amount that could improve the quality of life of millions of people from the city and could be saved for the future. Now you have installed more than 200 fog catchers in Lima and other provinces.

Atrapando agua y cuidando el medio ambiente

El proyecto Atrapanieblas surgio de una iniciativa por parte de los alumnos de la Red Universitaria Ambiental de Peru, para que mediante investigaciones  se puedan obtener datos sobre los problemas de agua y aridez de los lugares elevados de Lima, y  de esta forma encontrar soluciones. Cabe mencionar que Lima, la capital de Peru, esta localizada en la parte de la costa, siendo una de las zonas mas pobladas de Peru, pero a la vez con menor cantidad de agua disponible.

Sin embargo, aunque haya escasez de lluvias en toda la costa peruana, Lima tiene una humedad muy alta llegando hasta 98%, y sobretodo en las Lomas, por medio de la niebla que proviene de nuestro mar. Por lo que, para poder aprovechar el agua liquida proveniente de las neblinas se han ideado estos dispositivos llamados ?atrapanieblas?. Que permiten la obtencion de agua mediante un metodo sencillo y sobretodo que no tiene impactos negativos en el medio ambiente.

En la actualidad esta iniciativa se ha difundido y se estan realizando proyectos a mayor escala como por ejemplo en las Lomas de villa Maria, que es un distrito de lima ubicado hacia el sur, en donde ahora se pueden observar estructuras de metal y bambu de aproximadamente cuatro por seis metros, cubiertos por una malla. Por debajo estan los canales y las tuberias, que por medio de un bio-filtro llenan una cisterna de 1,100 litros.  Esto es posible, porque un ?atrapanieblas? permite capturar de cinco hasta quince litros de agua por dia.

El agua obtenida, que por cierto es muy cristalina, la utilizan para el cultivo de  papas, rabano, betarraga y lechuga, es decir, lo utilizan para alimentar a su familia, sobretodo en las zonas mas pobres, en donde no hay acceso al agua, aunque por otro lado segun algunos estudios,  un tercio del agua que se nos provee se desperdicia, una cantidad que podria mejorar la calidad de vida de millones de pobladores de la ciudad y que podria ser ahorrada para el futuro. Ahora ya se han instalado mas de 200 atrapanieblas en Lima y otras provincias.
