Light Pollution in Korea

by | 14-02-2016 15:13 recommendations 0

Light pollution is a new type of pollution caused by streetlight, lightening signs, and all other lights we use in our everyday lives. Light pollution may cause a lot of damage to people and all living things. For example, too much light can disturb the ecosystem, decrease the amount of harvest, and streetlight may pass through windows of houses and cause sleep disorder. Also, most of the lights in parks and gardens will shine the ground, while some of it may be discharged into the sky, which may lead to wasting energy. There has also been a research showing that being exposed to excessive light at might may pull down your rhythm of ecology, and that if we stop light from leaking, we can save 37.5% of building light, and 45.6% of streetlight.

The number of damage cases caused by light pollution is increasing at a fast rate in Korea. Korea reported that light pollution had been one of the 5 major environment problems. In 2015, for the first time, the harm on crops caused by light pollution was proved and acknowledge. A farmer claimed that because of the night lightening from the railroad, 85% of his yields from Perilla seeds and 19% from his beans had decreased. The court made a decision that the railroad company must pay for the damage, and this became the precedent of compensation from light pollution.

As light pollution is becoming an environmental problem, LED is rising as a countermeasure. It is said that using LED may decrease light pollution and because it is more effective in saving energy LED will be able to help solve this problem.

Thanks for sharing about this new term 'Light Pollution'. Light pollution competes with starlight in the night sky for urban residents, interferes with astronomical observatories, and, as you said disrupts ecosystems and has adverse health effects too. It's actually a bad side effect of industrial civilization. We should address this concern of light pollution by changing our habits , so that lighting is used more efficiently, with less waste and less creation of unwanted or unneeded illumination.

The term 'light pollution' is quite new for me and perhaps many of the people from developing countries like Nepal where we have to face energy crisis i.e loadshedding resulting lack of light facility at night. Anyway, I get to know about it so thanks for sharing it Soram Claire Kim..

Here in the PH, many cities are making the move for LED lighting already. Vast improvements in the night sky are seen and for the first time in many years, we can see the constellations already hehehe

According to me, the best way to face this problem is by recycling or reuse the light self to be another energy resource. As I know, light contains an electromagnet energy. Maybe we can do any research related with the movement of light energy to be another. Nice article and I get new inspiration to next research about this light pollution. Thank you for sharing :)

Rapid development and urbanization has created new environmental problems such as Light Pollution. A possible remedy could be, to adopt light sensing LEDs, which change the brightness according to the needs of the environment, thus reducing energy wastage. Although it might be expensive for the government in the short run, lots of money and energy will be saved in the long run.

I feel solar panels have an important role to play..A Solar-Led combo would be effective to tackle this issue as led consumes less energy...

LED is the best form of conservation of energy. Its costly at the moment but the cost covers the long running of the product. Thanks for the report.
