NO FOOD WASTE

by | 20-02-2016 20:11 recommendations 0

Food waste amounts to about 1.3 billion tons/yr. (www.bit.ly/1Tmbefv), same, 1 billion people face poverty and hunger each year. The solution is therefore clear that avoiding food wastage is the principal factor of ensuring global food security and eliminating hunger which is expected to be achieved by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goal 2).

In Ghana there are no major food policies. Food waste has acclimatized with local people and they see no much offence in over cooking and/or over eating. Post-harvest loss is another major contributor to food waste in Africa as most countries in West, Central and East Africa lacks effective technology for food storage.

Many of the homes in Ghana do not know much about fresh food preservation compared to manufactured preserved food products. This leads to a lot of organic waste in domestic homes which are not utilized for any good purposes – like composting. Students discard food stuffs the same way during vacation periods when they have to put their refrigerators off as they leave for vacation. However, this food stuffs could be given to others who are really in need of food within the same environment or community.

Post-harvest losses has also affected the availability of food in Ghana for long. Roads linking farming communities to cities are poorly constructed and it cost farmers a lot to transport their products to areas where they can sell them profitably.  This has caused some farmers in rural areas to incur huge financial loses and drives their interest from agricultural business.

There is an urgent need for governments in Africa to agree and develop food waste, export and import policies to help reduce the amount of food waste and also increase the economic status of farmers.

@Joshua, It's unfortunate that they lack both technology and the policy to limit this.. I hope there will be a limiting factor to a waste food soon :) Thank you for the report!
