Waste Of Bread In Algeria

by | 01-03-2016 05:02 recommendations 0

In Algeria, Bread is consumed significantly,It revealed the periodic reports issued by international bodies, including the United Nations Organization for Agriculture and Development and other organizations in algeria that the share of consumption of bread in Algeria, ranging from 65 to 70 million Baguette (a long thin loaf of French bread), at a rate of 1.8 loaf of Baguette per person per day.In the absence of consumption culture, wasting bread is continuing. Official statistics show that an average of 2.7 million bread does not consume daily, and be doomed either to poultry farmers, livestock or even garbage.
University restaurants considered one of the largest  "waste cells," which affects the  bread on a daily basis, where the organizers of these restaurants contract with bakeries to bring endless amounts of bread at a rate of at least one Baguette for each student, and given the large number of students the amount of wasted bread is greater than the consumed. The same thing is happening in the various university hospitals. In school canteens, school districts rely on studies before the acquisition of any quantities of bread, ranging from 40 to 45 Baguette for every 100 pupils.
Some waste collection establishments, especially in the capital, sort bread from other wastes, to restore and sell it to cattle breeders and poultry , but the only solution is consolidating the culture of consumption and avoid wasting.

Abdessamad, thanks for writing! A similar culture, in my knowledge, exists in China as well. The polite way of showing gratitude after you're served meal is to leave some food on the plate. Last time when I was doing a program related to China, the government was trying to fix this by holding a campaign and urging people to finish everything that's on the plates. Assuming from this, with proper guidance, bread crumbs and waste can also be history in the near future of Algeria, hopefully.

Abdessamad, thanks for sharing your report on Algeria's food waste. It is very interesting that Algerians love bread, while at the same time, it is sad that they are being wasted nowadays.
I guess you can look over Yuna's report. She recently wrote about Sweden's food waste policy, and the Swedish culture of not trying to throw away food was very impressive. I guess people, not only ones in Algeria but everyone, should keep this attitude in mind. Producing and consuming food at a proper level can have an enormous influence on cutting down waste disposal and even carbon emission.
Keep up the good work! :-)

Poultry and cattle feeding is good option. But improving consumption habit is best. Just imagine amount of capital loss and carbon emission in our food waste. Thanks for brilliant report Abdessamad

This is turning out to be a major problem since lots of resources were consumed to produce all these bread in the first place. I really hope the mentality of these people change ASAP so they become proactive in seeking alternative ways for utilizing the disposed bread.

Rightly said, although some waste collectors are sorting bread from other wastes to sell to cattle breeders but the attitude of food wastage has to stop at first place. Thanks for the post.
