|LATIN AMERICA| Argentina- More soybean and Less forest

by Luiz Bispo | 10-03-2016 21:08 recommendations 0

Do you know that Argentina is famous for soybean as well as soccer? Yes! Especially, Argentine province of Córdoba is mainly involved with in soy production, which has been a important export crop in Argentina.

However, it is said that the expansion of soy plantation has a huge effect on deforestation in history, which has occurred the environmental damage seriously.

Over the past decade, the increase of soy production make the Córdoba lost its native forest annually. Only 12% of this province'forest is left. The hill and mountain has been destructed dramatically.

To make matters worse, cutting the forest on a large-scale enable the rainwater rapidly to move away, which causes the water shortage. The mountain plays a significant role absorbing water and releasing it slowly so that if deforestation continues, the natural water function will be destroyed.

This tragic deforestation problem is not only Argentina's matter. Only 7% of Paraguay's Atlantic Forest remains because of the transformed area for cow pastures and cropland, which led erosion and water pollution.

It is necessary to use the natural sources in a sustainable way to achieve the economic success and distribute the wealth at the same time. There are various efforts for saving environment such as surveillance, arrest, fines, relevant laws etc. but seems not to observe the law well.

It is important to be aware of environmental problems and to have a mind to protect our earth voluntarily.

Conversion of forest lands to agricultural ones have always been an issue, since time immemorial. In such cases, it is the obligation of the government to intervene. However, not the government alone. For the approach to become more sustainable, the stakeholders should be involved, for them to have a sense of ownership. Anyway, thank you for a very nice article, Luiz. Such concern is very common but always being forgotten, so, thank you very much for the reminder. :)

Luiz, I well knew how Argentina is good at soccer, but I have never realized that soybeans are famous as well. Interesting! However, soybean plantation only for growing animals is a problem. There is need for manuals to be given to farmers for pursuing both production and sustainable development. Moreover, deforestation should be stopped, and we should research ways to efficiently utilize the current land field. Keep up the good work :-)

The main thing is sustainable production. If increased demand or export calls for cutting trees then it is not worth it and is not sustainable at all. I feel local government should intervene and make it illegal to cut forest be it any purpose-export(for additional income) or anything. Thanks for the report.

I hear similar news quite often, how severe the situation is in Brazil and other countries in that region. How increased meat consumption led to deforestation in Brazil is not even news now. I think the international society cannot blame one country for that matter, the whole society should walk through this problem hand in hand, as it is deeply intertwined. Thanks for writing!
