7 Reasons Why Businesses Should Switch to Solar Power

by | 12-03-2016 14:32 recommendations 0

As the race for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) began last year, many countries have started to make reforms in terms of new policies and investments. Out of the total 17 goals, the goal 7 which is ?Energy - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all? is a key area developing countries need to focus on mainly due to two reasons.

Firstly, power is required required for all sorts of activities such as business and education, and as a result, unsustainable and unreliable sources of power supply is a major constraint to a nation?s development. Secondly, using nonrenewable sources of energy emits tons of harmful gases into the atmosphere and ultimately accelerating the incidence of climate change.

The Bangladesh government is also taking initiatives to popularize renewable energy sources. Although renewable energy is generated through various sources such as solar, wind and biomass, for now the Bangladesh Power Division is encouraging switching to solar power.

Businesses are major consumers of energy and as more businesses are being set up, more power is being demanded day by day. Thus the Bangladesh Power Division has outlined 7 major reasons why businesses in Bangladesh should switch to solar power:

  1. Receive tax rebates: Bangladesh government is planning to introduce a tax rebate system for businesses who will switch to solar energy.

  2. Consistent energy bill: As the demand for energy goes up, the price of energy rises as well. But establishing a solar power system will allow businesses to have a consistent energy bill.

  3. Save money: This is one of the most important factors why businesses would want to make the switch. Lower energy costs translates to higher profits and thus higher dividends for the shareholders.

  4. Increase property value: Several researches have concluded that building with solar power systems have a higher property value and sell faster at a higher price. This is useful for property resale.

  5. Reduction in carbon emissions: Businesses account for a significant portion of carbon emissions. Thus making the switch will also be beneficial for the environment.

  6. Favorable branding as ?Green Business?:  Installing a solar power system reflects that a business is committed to supporting sustainability. Many consumers and communities are more likely to support businesses that are environmentally sustainable.

  7. Reliable and low maintenance system: Solar power systems require low maintenance compared to traditional power system. Several systems come with a warranty as well. This also translates to lower hassle and cost savings for businesses.

Although the country still has a long way to go to make a successful switch to solar energy, initiatives are being undertaken by the government to encourage its usage both in homes and businesses.

Here is a picture of the inauguration of the Souro Bangla Mini Grid Solar Power Plant in the region of Narsingdi. It is developed by Souro Bangla Ltd.

Hello John. You're right! The economic downturn has slowed this transition to some extent and hopefully as of now, the popularity of solar power is on the rise again. Thanks for your feedback.

Nice one, Syed! What I like the most is the implementation of tax rebate system. This movement is something that have always been suggested, since time immemorial. However, it becomes difficult due to a lot of economic reasons, alongside self-interest. Thus, this movement of the Bangladesh government will surely set a good example to other countries! Job well done!

    Keep it up!
Thats a real matter: businesses are willing to switch if they can make profit doing so.

Hey Heonjun. Yes Chinese manufacturers played a key role in releasing affordable solar panels in to the market. Actually I read about this a while back on how Chinese companies helped one of Elon Musk's ventures 'Solar City'. Hopefully the solar power system market is gaining traction and will boom once again. Thanks for your valuable feedback. :)

Hello Minjoo. You are absolutely correct. Budget still remains as the major concern for not adopting solar power systems which are still relatively expensive. As using fuels for generating power is a much cheaper alternative in the short run, many businesses are still reluctant to make the switch. Government grants and financing schemes for installing solar power systems will solve this problem to some extent. Thank you so much for your feedback. :)

Thanks for your feedback Tanverjit :) Exactly. Businesses shifting to renewable energy will have a quicker impact than waiting for the adoption by several houses.

Hi Syed, thanks for introducing the solar energy issues in Bangladesh. In my knowledge, solar panel industry has floundered worldwide due to the large government aid from the Chinese, seeking to foster the domestic renewable energy industry, which led to over production and over competition that ultimately ended with damage to other solar companies. I lately read that the industry has started to bounce back. It is good to see how the Solar energy receives attention in your country. Thanks for sharing!

Syed, thanks for sharing reasons why companies need to use solar energy in Bangladesh. I guess the main premise is enough budget to support all companies implement solar panels. It is true that in the long term, solar energy can be provided in much cheaper cost. However, the money for buying and installing the panels is vey costly, and this degrades the morale of companies to use solar energy. Thus for the initiatives to gain success, the government will need to gain enough budget to support companies covering the initial cost. Keep up the good work :-)

Huge amounts of power is consumed by the businesses each day . If they shift to the renewable energy, that would reduce the usage of non renewable resources which would further reduce the air pollution too.
    Thanks for reporting.
