The alarming situation of air pollution in Hanoi

by | 16-03-2016 01:32 recommendations 0

Recently, the AQI (Air quality index) of Hanoi has exceeded the standard level regulated by WTO. According to many health experts, the air quality in Hanoi can cause many diseases related to respiratory.

If the AQI is in the range of 100-200, the air quality is considered as poor and harmful to the health of human. And in early days of March 2016, the AQI of Hanoi was around 150. What should be concerned is that this AQI of Hanoi seems to be nearly equal to that of Beijing at some times, a city well-known for the highest level of pollution in the world. Though the AQI of Hanoi is not always high like that, but these recent indexes somewhat indicate that Hanoi air quality is downgraded significantly. If effective measures are not taken seriously, there will be no cure for Hanoi's pollution in the future.

Also, compare to Ho Chi Minh City, another metropolis of Vietnam which has more citizens and vehicles, Hanoi, surprisingly, shows a higher level of pollution. Therefore, according to the report of Health Department of Ministry of Transportation, the number of people hospitalized due to having respiratory problems in Hanoi is twice as much as that in Ho Chi Minh.

Why does air quality of Hanoi fall down? The specialized analyses of experts will reveal the causes and solution. These analyses may be useful to other countries which do not want to be caught in the same situation.

According to the statistic of Ministry of Nature and Environment, Hanoi totally has more than 1000 buildings under construction so more dust and ash in the air is inevitable. Many old industrial manufacturers with traditional methods of producing also emit dust and foul-smelling waste. Besides, many trees were cut down unreasonably, which somewhat reduce the air quality. A famous professor told that only when the innovations are implemented simultaneously in many fields such as transport, construction, industrial production and community activities, can the problem of polluted air be tackled thoroughly.

Thanks so much for all of your comments. I and my friends who love green environment are trying so hard to implement the most practical methods to reduce the air pollution in Hanoi. We often call individuals and organizations for growing trees. Let our youth power be shine. <3 <3 <3

It is sad to hear about the air conditions in Hanoi. I can totally relate to your article as the situation is the same here(In India) too. I hope that with time there will be new ways to curb pollution and the situation would improve.

Thao, there must be concerns between residents living in Hanoi. It is shocking to hear that Hanoi's air pollution level is similar to ones in Beijing, and I can feel there needs urgent measures to target this problem. So are the reasons for air pollution in Hanoi not yet being revealed? Assuming from your article, I suppose only after the development is made can the Hanoi enjoy a cleaner air. Still, there needs a lot to be done to prevent harmful situations. Thanks for posting, and keep up the good work :-)

hello Thao! I think air pollution leads most directly to the human among other types of pollution. People should realize that their action, putting their lights in while they are out can make a large difference in their daily life. I didn't know that some manufacturers in Hanoi still persue traditional ways. They should use green technologies even though they are slightly expensive if they think about the future :))
    All the best,

Hi Thao, thank you for posting the first report on air pollution. I see the city of Hanoi can certainly try implementing more regulations. In South Korea, fine dust has raised huge awareness, so now we even have 'fine dust watch' in the weather forecast. They say fine dust is even more detrimental to human health. Hope your city can keep the air clean just like Beijing did years ago during the Olympics (Though it did not last that way for long). Thank you for posting!

Truly, Air pollution is a menace especially in urban areas. Here in Nigeria, the use of neighborhood generators has largely contributed to pollution of the environment with fumes. Adequate measures should be put in place to check it. Thanks for sharing Thao.

Air pollution is detrimental not only to environment but also to health of humans and other living organisms. The authorities should put measures in place to improve it like switching to electric cars, offering subsidies for electric or hybrid cars, use of unleaded petrol, buses running on CNG , checking of emission levels of vehicles etc.
Construction, as you mentioned, contributes to lot of dust. I wonder if there can be any way to stop/reduce it.
    Thanks for the report.
