Intellectual Decisions on Environmental Awareness and Solutions (IDEAS) For Ghana, under the leadership of Tunza Eco-generation Ambassador - Joshua Amponsem, had its second activity geared towards a national environmental sanitation challenge for elementary and junior high schools. The initiative is been pioneered by the IDEAS for University of Cape Coast.

On, the 11th of March, IDEAS for University of Cape Coast team was at IMAM KHUMEINI junior high school on the to educate the students on the importance of environmental sanitation and its relevance to our health, as part of our environmental sanitation workshop. We were warmly received by the assistant headmaster upon our arrival.

As was our aim, the workshop was mainly focused on sanitation and health. Emmanuel Marfo (a member of IDEAS for UCC team) spoke on the need to keep our environment clean by avoiding littering, sweeping our surroundings (both at home and in school). He also elaborated on proper waste handling and disposal, which he said, one of the effects of improper disposal of waste is flooding. He climaxed his presentation by stressing on personal hygiene and its importance in which he said, we are part of the environment and there is the need for us to keep our bodies clean as well. Some of the personal hygiene practices he mentioned include bathing regularly, brushing our teeth twice daily and washing our clothes.

To ensure that the students understood the presentation, there was a question and answer section led by Isaac Abugri and Obiri Charles (both members of IDEAS for UCC). Souvenirs, comprising of pens, sticky notes and leaflets) were given to students who answered questions and others who contributed to the workshop through asking questions and giving suggestions on how to ensure proper sanitation in our communities.

As we prepare to move ahead to other schools, we anticipate that there will be a total behavioural transformation in the lives of our future leaders.

Minjoo Mentor, thanks for the compliment. We are planning on doing this activity for 5 schools in each of the 10 regions in Ghana and climax it with an essay competition for all the 50 schools, after which I expect to establish Tunza Ghana.

Thank you Arushi Madan. It really makes me happy that I have been able to mentor young students to have so much passion as I have for the environment. I pray Isaac, Charles and Emmanuel will become eco-generation ambassadors some day.

Thank you Rahul and Heonjun, children are more vulnerable to sanitation related health implications. I see it as a responsibility to teach them.

Joshua, I guess you had a meaningful time at IMAM KHUMEINI junior high school. Teaching someone is an amazing experience you cannot change with something else, especially if that education was about saving one's health and the environment. How long are you planning to continue this program? How many schools are you going to visit? It may be tough, so I wish my best regards to you who are enlightening the world. Keep up the good work, and I hope to hear about the results of your wonderful program. :-)
