Can Car Free Day Reduce Air Pollution?

by Dewi Retno S | 17-03-2016 23:21 recommendations 0

Car free day is an event where people not using motor-engine vehicle and using bike or walk instead. In Indonesia, some cities already make their own car free day. Usually it was in weekend, and people can enjoy their day with sport such as biking or jogging. Car free day itself actually create to reduce air pollution in big city. Theoretically, people don?t use their vehicle thus reducing the emission.

In one of my lessons, my professor questioned whet ever car free day is effective to reduce air pollution. She said that the high concentration of emission in neighborhood can migrate to the lower concentration one, in this case is the area which held car free day. So, if the area which surrounded ?car free day? area still produce high emission or pollution, it?s possible that the air pollution is still happen in that area.

The other problem from explanation above is the people health in car free day area. They may assume that the air quality is in good condition because of there was no vehicle. But maybe there is still much pollution from neighborhood.

So, what should we do?

Indeed car free day can reduce emission thus minimizing air pollution. But we need to remember that it was only in that area. Emission in neighborhood is also need to decrease in order to keep air pollution from happening. One solution in my mind is to determine a car free day in a week, where almost all parts of the city can participate in. It?s effective to reduce pollution and also keep the emission from migration.

I believe car free day should be a global event and adequate measures should be put in place by individual governments for the proper implementation. In Nigeria, we have several policies that seem to cater for pollutions but it is saddening that government bureaucracies and corrupt officials have sabotaged this efforts and rendered these ideas ineffective. thanks for sharing Dewi.

Dewi, Car Free Day is an excellent method of grabbing attention and advertising the need of environmental protection. The only problem is that not many nations or cities are following this event. I guess the government should hold its strong opinion towards implementing this day not as a small, temporary event, but at a national scale followed by regulation. Thanks for posting, and have a great day :-)

@Dewi-Oh is it ? It's not quite heard of and not as popular as Earth Hour/Earth Day/World Environment Day. Thanks.

Hi Dewi! Thanks for introducing car free day in Indonesia! I had a suspicious glance on these kind of events (no car day, car free day) thinking temporary measures would not be enough to solve air pollution in city area, until I read an article about 'the miracle of Beijing', where the government banned cars from going into the city to clean up the air for the Olympics. It definitely seemed effective. Thanks for sharing and hope to see you next time :D

    Dear Nilanjan,
That's good to hear other countries have car free day too!

    Dear Arushi,
It think there is an event called World Car Free Day in September 22nd. But I think it's not fully implemented globally yet. But surely it will be wonderful if we can minimize the emission in the entire world :)

Reducing emission should be every country's priority so that their increased emission does not impact their neighbouring country.
Moreover, your reports makes me think why not have a global car free day just like we have Earth Hour, Earth Day globally -so that on that so called 'Global Car Free Day', there is minimum emission in the entire world. Thanks for your report.

We too have tried this in India (especially in Delhi) and have received an overwhelming response from the residents!
