Reintroduction of oryx

by | 25-03-2016 00:33 recommendations 0

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has reintroduced 25 scimitar horned oryx to their natural habitat in Chad.

It was part of its work with the Chad government on a reintroduction programme aiming to create a healthy population of as many as 500 of the oryx in an isolated natural reserve.

The first shipment will be held in a large, fenced area until they are ready to be released into the wild after the start of the rainy season, reported Wam, the state news agency.

The oryx will each be fitted with a satellite collar that will be used to track and help protect the animals. The species is considered extinct in the wild, and the UAE is home to the largest single population, at 3,000 oryx kept in captivity.

Harmanjot and other fellow ambassadors, I totally agree that EAD has done a great job. Introducing or reintroducing animal species to a certain area should be done very carefully, and sadly, there were actually a lot of cases that have failed to bring back the habitat. However, with sustainable interest and effort I hope this project could gain success. Thanks for posting and hope you have a great day :-)

Thanks Harmanjot! I nodded reading John's comment. If this program can reap huge success, it would be good to capture the structure of the program and publicize for bench marking. Thanks for letting us know! Hope it succeeds.

Thanks for letting us know, Harmanjot! Biodiversity conservation highly-prioritizes the existence of these species in the wild, hence, even they do exist, if it's in captivity, we won't be able to consider it as a part wildlife. Thus, this movement of Environment Agency Abu Dhabi is another milestone for Global Biodiversity Conservation. I just would like to ask, are there any representatives of IUCN and CITES in the event? This is a very good activity and should have been documented by these organizations for a wider information dissemination and proper documentation.

Anyway, thank you very much Harmanjot! Looking forward to hear more of this kind soon. I suddenly became more excited to read your future reports. Have a great day! :)
