Indian announced its new plan by which the nation might get the 100% electric cars on road by 2030.
The government is working on a scheme to provide electric cars on zero down payment for which people can pay out of their savings on expensive fossil fuels.
"India can become the first country of its size which will run 100 per cent of electric vehicles. We are trying to make this programme self financing. We don't need one rupee support from the government. We don't need one rupee investment from the people of India," Power Minister Piyush Goyal said at an event organised by CII Young India.
The idea is inspired by the success of the government?s campaign to promote energy-efficient LED bulbs, which has seen costs falling by 80% over 18 months. Power utilities distribute these bulbs and consumers pay for them over a period of time from the savings in their power bills.
The plan has the approval of the automobile industry.
?It is a great, workable model. Promoting electric or hybrid cars through innovative schemes can reduce vehicular pollution, reduce fossil fuel dependence and will be beneficial for the consumer. We will work with the government on this,? said Vishnu Mathur, director general of industry lobby Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
India?s automobile industry is the sixth-largest in the world and accounts for 22% of the country?s total manufacturing output.
India will be the first country to think on such a scale.
The model could have ramifications for nations around the globe who are determined to lower their carbon emissions.

Nice report Tanverjit. Nice to see our neighboring taking so many initiatives to preserve the environment. As cars are major consumers of fossil fuels, replacing it with electric cars powered by solar or other means will translate to lower carbon emissions.

A great report Tanverjit! The answer to your question Minjoo is :-The government has subsidized the cost of CFLs so that people switch over to them. As we know CFLs not just are long lasting but also effective in reducing electricity consumption and therefore help in reducing electricity cost to a great extent!

Tangerjit, it is impressing that the program of changing its total automobile industry into electric cars is through self-financing. How come the cost of electric light bulbs have fallen almost 80%? Was it the only power of government's campaign? If all the cars in India change into electric ones after 14 years, that will be awesome. Thanks for your report and have a great day :-)
