Recommendations for Dust Management in Kathmandu Valley

by | 06-04-2016 19:12 recommendations 0

In the previous report I explained the objectives, phases and challenges of our research based project "Is Dust Manageable in Kathmandu Valley?"

In this report I would to describe the recommendations for effective management of dust based on our research.

Our recommendation incorporates multi-sectoral participatory approach. Recalling the fact that, all 6 air quality monitoring stations installed in Kathmandu valley between 2000- 2003 with DANISH AID became dysfunctional since 2007.

We emphasize, proper maintenance and monitoring of proposed 11 air quality monitoring stations be assured prior installation. Out of 11, nine air quality monitoring stations will be installed in Kathmandu valley.

Coordination between and among departments and ministries is a must for integrated execution of any policy, rules and regulations.

Likewise, subsidy provision to eco- friendly vehicles, timely management of earthquake debris is crucial and urgent.

Environment, Population and Health (EPH) should be integrated in the school curriculum since primary level.

Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) needs to be given due concern for sustainable infrastructure development.

Green Cover should be maximized and public park, open spaces should be given priority in the crowded valley.

Construction and Demolition act should be formulated and strictly implemented in the city.

It is highly recommended to incorporate Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in sustainable development plan. BRT is bus based mass transit ensuring reliable, comfortable and cost effective services at metro level capacities.

Public needs to be sensitized for self protection and encouraged to use sophisticated masks like N95 for personal protection during longer exposure to heavily dusted area as usual masks are ineffective to prevent inhalation of finer particulate matter.

Within limited timeframe and resources we made our best efforts to pour limelight on the degrading air quality of Kathmandu valley and alarming threat imposed by dust. Our efforts may be a drop in an ocean but we believe it holds worthy meaning for future researches and supports Livable Kathmandu vision. To conclude, definitely it is challenging to manage dust in Kathmandu but owing to quote of legendary Nelson Mandla everything seems impossible until it's done, we believe, together we can upgrade and restore our air quality!

Dear Alina sister, Kathmandu has been listed as one of the worst cities in terms of air quality. Lack of air quality monitoring stations make it more serious to know the reliable facts in lack of data. Nevertheless, hopeful that our recommendations would be useful to concerned stakeholders :)

Dear Heonjun, yeah I totally agree public including many well educated are also reluctant to put on masks. But at this level of exposure to air pollution we need to motivate us and people around to use sophisticated mask. Afterall, prevention is better than cure :)

Dear Minjoo, thank you for your kind comment. As the pictures I extracted from google didn't have clear resources mentioned, I didn't mention it. I would make sure to mention the next time.
Thank you for your kind guidelines :)

Dear Arushi sister, yeah nicely pointed out carpooling has been trending these days in Nepal. Car Free Day, Ktm Walks etc. are also organized each year but the impacts looks limited to few days only. I personally realized that self motivation is crucial for attitude change.
Thank you for your kind comment :)

Bindu, thanks for your continuous effort! I think people generally are not inclined to wear masks even when they're informed of the harm the dust inflicts. I, too, am one of them. Honestly it feels like i'd be sacrificing more by wearing a mask and give up other pleasures by not wearing it. And about the school education on environment, I am perfectly on your side on this. I also remember that I learned very few things about environment when I was in school. Good to read your ideas, cheers!

Bindu, thanks for sharing the recommendations, continuing from your last report. Since your article is divided into two parts, if I were you, I would have changed the title like 'Is Dust Manageable in Kathmandu?: Part 1(2)' to make it more interesting haha.
Also, it is very important to state your references when you use pictures that you did not take it by yourself. Thanks for another great report and have a great day :-)

  • Arushi Madan says :
Very well recommended points for dust quality management. One of the strategies could be to encourage people to use car-pooling /shared car. Vehicle emission standards to be implemented and every year all vehicles must get their emission checked to ensure they comply with the standards. Car free day at least once in a month. Encouraging hybrid/electric cars. Thanks for sharing.
