Recycling in Marathon

by Rohan Kapur | 07-04-2016 14:50 recommendations 0

Dear Ambassadors, recently I participated the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. Thousands of people participated in this annual event in Dubai held on 22-Jan-16. It is a very good & effective form of exercise & helps you to keep you fit if you do prepare yourself & participate in such events. Besides taking care of your body it is equally important to take care of the environment. The organizers were as usual eco-conscious & gave away glass bottles of energy drinks with the race pack. Also, the other items were recyclable as well. Such things hold value as the participants realize the value of recycling.

On the day of the event there was large crowd gathered for participation & the atmosphere was charged up. Besides, the recyclable stuff lots of plastic water bottles were handed over to the runners. Water is basic necessity thus cannot be avoided & normally it is dispensed in plastic bottles only.

In UAE these plastic water bottles are manufactured as per international standards and are 100% recyclable. Now, to ensure that they are recycled their disposal must not be made as a general waste. Segregated bins are placed all over the UAE and the recyclables must be disposed of as per their class. They are divided into Paper, Plastic & General.

Such bins for plastic disposal in large sizes were placed at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon venue as well.

Folks, as you might be aware that I am a big recycling enthusiast and I & my building mates keep all the recyclable segregated & the same is handed over to local recycling center every week. They come to my house to collect.

Carrying on the same habit outside my house also I made it a point to collect many plastic bottles at the venue & dispose properly at the designated place. The empty bin was soon full.

I was very happy to note that noticing my actions many other people were motivated & started using the designated bins instead of throwing at the road. I am a firm believer that your actions influence others & positivity spreads faster.

I am very sure that this report will motivate my fellow ambassadors to enhance their ongoing efforts & they will recycle more & more & serve the Mother Earth by saving the landfills & promote recycling.

Thanks for reading.

We in Delhi too have an initiative known as 'happy streets' where people gather specific location on every Sundays. We have small street plays on various environmental issues and social issues along with marathon , cycling races, and other activities. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Hi Minjoo, Here in UAE also we all use reusable plastic water bottles & tumblers. You will find one at my study table always.
    Thanks for your valuable comments.

Rohan, it looks like you had a splendid experience participating in the marathon! Giving out recyclable water bottles is a great idea, and actually in my country, reusable plastic water bottles as well as holding tumblers has become one of the fashion trends! Thanks for wonderful pics, and hope you have a great weekend!

Hi Rohan. Good to know you participated in the marathon! By giving more economic benefit, I believe people will start to actively participate in making a cleaner world! I recently experienced this myself. Few years ago my university did not grant any discount for using tumbler in the cafes inside the campus but now they do about 1/4 dollar per a cup of coffee. And I now see more than a quarter of population(I think?) carries tumblers. Even very small things can amount to something great. Thanks for letting us know of the marathon and your activity! take care!

It's really sad to note that even though recycle bin is placed still plastic bottles are seen thrown around, outside the garbage bin and near your feet etc. Proper waste disposal and recycling is everyone's responsibility towards environment in which all of us are stakeholders. Good job done Rohan. Thanks for sharing.
