Beers made out of recycled wastewater

by | 10-04-2016 12:57 recommendations 0

Beer production can have negative environmental Impacts Water, natural gas, electricity and transportation cost huge impact on our nature. The process also uses and disposes considerable amount of Green House Gas, especially for the carbonation process. As a response, some breweries are taking step further to reduce their environmental impact.

Due to continuous California drought, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company decided to adopt to brew beer from recycled greywater (wastewater from sinks, showers, baths, dish washers and laundry machine.) The Idea came from the fact that Californians focus on conservation [but not on] water recycling. Last October they started the process by a blind taste test at an urban sustainability conference.  The taste panel, who tasted both regular beers and recycled-water beers, couldn?t tell the difference. The company passed a taste test at a Bay Area sustainability conference.

Because California cannot directly pump recycled water to be used as the drink water supply, this recycled-water beers couldn?t be primarily served as the commercially benefitting products. Instead, the focus was on using this beer as tool to keep the public and policymakers? attentions on this problem. Getting the attention from the legislation to get permission to bring recycled water directly into the drinking water supply will serve as an initiative step to apply this technology even further.

We have to admit that brewing beer from recycled water is unique, unusual approach. But increasing number of breweries in United States is looking for innovative ways to reduce their environmental impact. In that sense, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company?s use of NASA technology is taking notable step on producing eco-friendly products.

Very interesting solution! I'm just wondering how big the impact is of having recycled wastewater replace beer compared to other liquids and whether other companies are taking the same or similar action plans. Thank you for the report!

Yuna, it is interesting how the company could think of making beer from recycled water. Though the taste may be the same, some people, including me, might still have some biases that recycled one may not be as good as the original one. Actually in Korea, there is a water brand that is made out of tap water, and is actually on sale nowadays. These actions may effectively grab people and the government's attention. Thanks for posting, and have a wonderful week!

Hi Yuna! Another interesting news from the US! Isn't it funny to see how the severe drought that everybody worried led to this invention!? Although I'm skeptical if there's anyone willing to drink beer made of recycled water, just like you said, it's a new approach and it sure caught my attention! Thanks for sharing! and tell us more if you happen to drink that beer!
