EQUINOX PHENOMENON

by | 10-04-2016 21:06 recommendations 0

An equinox is an astronomical occurance in which the plane of the Earth's equator passes along the center of the sun. This occurs twice every year around March 20th and September 23rd. At this time, day and night are nearly equal in duration all over the planet. The day is characterized by hot spells especially in March.

In India, 13 districts experienced unprecedented heat waves for a couple of days especially between 12 noon and 3 pm.

In Kenya, messages were forwarded on Social media and SMS through mobile phones. The message indicated that exposure to the sun especially between 12 noon and 3 pm could lead to sunstroke and dehydration. The message sent out some general precautions such as taking more fruits and less meat. It also encouraged increased intake of fluids to keep hydrated and to take frequent cold showers. Regular blood pressure check up was also encouraged. Temperatures were anticipated to rise upto 40 ?C.

In conclusion, Nairobi experienced very high temperatures during the last week of March.

Thanks for the report. This has been going quite viral on the social media for the past week. Due to climate change we can expect such heat waves in the future and thus we must take precautionary measures to minimize damages.
