Technologies in UAE that save the environment |
---|
Wasteful energy policies, overuse of resources, water supply shortages, global climate change, and deforestation are just some of the issues experts say need to be addressed for humans to achieve sustainable living on this planet. By the year 2025, an additional 2.9 billion people will strain tightening water supplies, and the world's energy needs will go up 60 percent by 2030, according to the United Nations. In this scenario, only technology can help make the future a little brighter. Following are some of the technologies in UAE to save various resources. WATER United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched new initiatives and an international research prize to develop technologies that can help quench the Persian Gulf?s thirst. The UAE capital Abu Dhabi receives an average annual rainfall of around 75 millimeters (2.95 inches). Despite this, the country consumes more water per capita than any other country, around 82 percent above the global average. This is only going to get worse, with an increasing urban population who have already developed a taste for ultra-luxury living, complete with water parks and perfectly green golf courses. On top of this, climate change is leading the region towards an even hotter and drier future. A study in October last year reported that the Persian Gulf could be so hot and dry that it will be uninhabitable by 2071. In an effort to meet its demand for water, the country has awarded $5 million (?3.5 million) to researchers from Germany, Japan and the UEA to develop cloud-draining technologies. This money will help develop the ?warm cloud seeding? technique currently used in the dry winter months. This method increases water condensation within the cloud. Planes are flown just below cloud level, where they release over a hundred flares loaded with particles of potassium chloride and sodium chloride. Updrafts carry these particles into the clouds and provide water vapor with something to condense on. Once heavy enough, these globules of condensed water vapor fall as rain. The awarded scientists will try to develop technology to enhance the efficiency of this technique. The research will include cloud formation and algorithm-led cloud tracking, while scientists from universities in UAE will develop nanotechnology to increase water condensation. TRANSPORTATION Ministry of Infrastructure Development has launched an initiative to establish charging stations for electric vehicles. The move is part of the ministry's efforts to support the green economy and sustainable development.UAE aims to become a global leader in this area, and centre for the export and re-export of green products, as well as technologies to maintain a sustainable environment. UAE has been keen since its inception to develop its complete infrastructure with a high degree of quality and efficiency, catapulting it to advanced positions in the Global Competitiveness indices in the field of infrastructure quality in various forms. ENERGY In line with its strategic goal to make the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) the most energy efficient business hub, Economic Zones World (EZW) has signed a MoU with DEWA's Etihad ESCO to retrofit its existing buildings and facilities to make them more energy efficient. Jafza has always been in the forefront of implementing the Government's green initiatives to promote and preserve sustainable ecosystem. The initiation of the present retrofit project further reinforces its commitment. The move is an important step forward in the direction of achieving the Government's Dubai 2021 plan and following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to use technology and innovation to convert Dubai into a sustainable green city. The project will significantly reduce Jafza's carbon footprint and will make its operations more sustainable and efficient. The first phase of the project comprises energy retrofit of 157 staff accommodation buildings in Jafza and includes replacement of 5000 old air conditioners with highly efficient split units 85,000 old light fixtures with high efficiency LEDs and 31,000 old water fixtures with new efficient water units. Harmanjot, warm cloud seeding seems very interesting to me. This was qutie an issue about a decade ago, but I was wondering why it has disappeared from our interest nowadays. Hope to see UAE being the very first leader to use clouds for providing water. Thanks for your report and have a great day!

Thanks for posting, Harmanjot! I see lots of money is poured in to make your society greener. One that especially drags my attention is cloud draining technology. It could be of great help to prevent further desertification and even recover some parts. Thanks for report and it would be great if you could give us follow-ups on the research in your future reports! thanks!
