Recycling is converting a waste into a reusable product. It?s importance is increasing by the day since it protects the environment by removing harmful commodities such as plastics from the environment which takes a lot of time to decompose. Thus it is one of the integral solutions for the sustainability of our planet.
Coca Cola sells soft drinks through plastic bottles, many of which are not recycled properly in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The plastic bottles are either dumped into the landfill sites or thrown away into water bodies such as rivers and lakes where the aquatic life is threatened.
Thus Coca Cola implemented an awareness campaign in Dhaka called ?Coca-Cola Happiness Arcade? which encouraged people to recycle plastic Coca-Cola bottles. This was no ordinary awareness campaign as Coca-Cola used an innovative approach to really engage the younger generation.
Coca-Cola wanted to make recycling fun for the citizens of Dhaka thus they developed an arcade gaming machine and placed it in 6 different locations in Dhaka city for 6 days. This was not a traditional arcade gaming machine which required coins to start the game. This machine required to insert Coca Cola bottles in order to initiate the game.
This campaign illustrates an excellent use of the concept of gamification where the elements of gaming such as points, scores and level ups are used to influence different actions. Through gaming Coca Cola encouraged thousands of citizens to not throw away the plastic bottles but rather insert them into the machines. Through this process thousands of bottles were collected and ultimately recycled by Coca Cola.
This was a very fun and engaging way to encourage citizens to lead more Eco friendly lifestyles and I am really looking forward to seeing more innovative recycling approaches from other companies in the future.

Thanks for the feedback Heonjun. I think Coca Cola implemented similar technologies to promote recycling in other nations as well. But the campaign I posted is based in Dhaka

Oh i actually saw this event on youtube sometime ago. It wasn't in dhaka though. I guess it was an international campaign. I think it was well planned and got some desirable level of attention from people. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Mohammed. Yes Coca Cola should be taken as an inspiration by other MNCs. If they do so I am confident that we will see similar innovations from them as well.

Hey Ayimo. You're absolutely right. Maximizing the recycling of the bottles require a better implementation of a better system which is mobile.

Hello Minjoo. Yes this was an engaging way to advertise their products as well as show their responsibility towards the environment.

Hello Dewi. Actually it was only installed in 6 locations. It was more of an awareness or shall I say an Activation Campaign to raise awareness. Although it was implemented temporarily, benefits can be derived from long term implementation of these arcade machines.

Thanks Adam. It is true. Coca Cola needs to install these in places where it is accessible for the most people.

Coca-Cola is very well known for such innovative 'Happiness campaigns' inspiring people to recycle. They have such campaigns for many countries and best part is that they have customised the campaigns as per each country. They had one very nice for UAE too. As a big brand, they are fulfilling their responsibility towards environment and impacting people too to care for environment. Thanks for sharing.

It is a great initiative by Coca-Cola,If all such big Companies consider this as an example and if they come up with similar ideas our world would be much better,I hope that instead of using this as a marketing technique ,if they seriously work on saving our environment, they can create a big change. Thanks for sharing Ahmad :)

Coco-Cola is a big company indeed, implementing such machine would only functioning at urban areas where many purchase their product in large quantities such as Drinking parlour and so on. If they really want the plastic bottles to be recycle, they should employ people moving round and picks some which is consumed and throw away.... Thanks for sharing with us.

Syed, looks like Coca Cola launched such an interesting project to both advertise its product and encourage recycling plastic bottles. I guess youngsters will especially be interested to those games. By the way, I also agree with Adam and Dewi that those machines should be placed where people move a lot. Thanks for sharing, and next time don't forget to site the information and image :-)

As Adam Zhou said, is it all over the city? Because there are maybe those who buy Coca Cola to be drink at home, and maybe they too lazy just to bring it to the arcade (which maybe only in some spot). But it was an innovative way to encourage recycling. Thanks for sharing :)

Coca-Cola is such a big company and many purchase its projects all of the world, so it's great how they're delivering such an impact to their consumers to spread awareness, especially since they have a lot of influence. Not only that, it seems really creative as well. However, many people probably won't have the time to stop by one of those (assuming, they're not all over the city), and they'll just dump it in a trash can. I wish for more ideas from Coca-Cola to come. Thanks for sharing!
