The Ideal Home Initiative by DEWA

by | 03-08-2016 16:53 recommendations 0

The household that follows the best practices will be recognised under a new initiative launched by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa).
The initiative called ?The Ideal Home Initiative? has been launched by Dewa in corporation with other entities to recognise the household that does the most to achieve the highest standards of public health and safety, environmental protection, and raise awareness within the community about the best practices for an ideal home environment.
The Ideal Home initiative works to instil a culture of sustainable use among families, while motivating others to adhere to best practices.
The initiative, which will conclude in September, also encourages Dubai families to compete positively in applying the standards set by the government and help towards achieving the Smart Dubai Initiative.
The initiative encourages families to participate by working to create the most environment-friendly home environment. This will help Dewa to study how people are trying to save electricity and water in their homes and workplaces to achieve better standards of living, happiness and greater resource sustainability for generations to come.
Dewa will focus on a number of factors to determine the winner. These include the individual use of electricity and water and family use based on monthly bills, efforts made to set air-conditioning to 24 degree Celsius, the use of solar energy, the use of modern economical irrigation techniques, water tank cleanliness, the use of energy-saving lights and environment-friendly appliances, and the family?s awareness of the best ways to save electricity and water.
Participation in the first phase of the initiative is confined to inhabitants of homes in areas which will be determined shortly, on condition that the family is living in the current property for at least one year. Also, the head of the household must be registered with Dubai Smart Government?s initiative MYID, thus making it easier to link the data of participants.
The initiative has been launched in cooperation with Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the Community Development Authority in Dubai (CDA), Dubai Smart Government, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, and the General Directorate of Civil Defence.

That's so great Harmanjot! I especially like it even more than other policies that focus on hardware part of the society since the program, according to your story, seems to be aiming the core, software part of the society, culture! Meager change in facilities might be in vain without change from within!! Thanks for writing!

It all starts with thinking, then we go to planning to execute our ideas and then the action starts on ground. If the action is followed for quiet a period of time it become a culture, then your idea becomes adopted by the community and they defend it. The culture of conserving the environment can be maintained and even be defended by the society itself . I applaud this great initiative by the conserve champions of Dubai in bringing up Culture of conservation in homes.

I read this in Newspapers as well. Unfortunately it is for Dubai residents only, not for Sharjah residents like us but nevertheless we continue to adopt eco-friendly practices in our day-to-day life and continue to save energy as much as possible. Thanks for posting.

I love the idea! I have been to Dubai once and I must say that I was blown away. As a lover of modern architecture, I was amazed at the architectural accomplishments in Dubai. It appears that the motto there seems to be 'the bigger, the better'. I am pleased to see that DEWA is encouraging the green initiative. I think that if anyone can go big in going green, it would be Dubai. I can't wait to see what developers will come up with from here on out, keeping the green initiative in mind. Having an Eco-friendly home not only reduces one's carbon footprint, but also saves energy, money and resources which is great, considering that life in Dubai can be pretty expensive. A challenge that will come with going green for Dubai is that Dubai is an oil-exporter, owing to the discovery of oil in territorial waters off Dubai in 1966.Oil revenue from 1969 supported a period of growth for Dubai. However, the Dubai's GDP percentage accounted for by oil has remarkably reduced from 24% in 1990 to 7% in 2004 to 2% in 2008 and the oil reserves are expected to diminish in 20 years. Real estate and construction (22.6% of the GDP), trade (16%) and financial services (11%) are the current largest contributors to Dubai's economy. It therefore makes sense that DEWA is encouraging the green home initiative.
