Insect Food

After the second workshop with children on 'insect food' as one of the solutions to the water shortage problem, our members explored diverse ways to approach children, getting 'insect food' idea familiar to them.

Our member visited local insect food restaurant and cafe to try out various insect dishes. One restaurant called, 'Papillon's kitchen'(named after the 1973 year movie, 'Papillon', where main characters survived in prison, eating insects) served fool meal: appetizer, entree, and dessert. You could not tell served dishes were using insects as main ingredients by look. But problem is you already know what dishes are made of, scooping one spoon is difficult.

I went to a cafe which serves variety of tea drinks made from insect powder. Tea tastes like Chinese medicine so you feel like you are getting healthier.

Nowadays, 'insect food' idea gets attention from media in Korea, many newspapers and TV programs have special sections covering the food. However, general public's conception toward 'insect food' is still raw. Having 'insect food' is more like an event, one time deal.

After trying out insect dishes, I come to a conclusion that indirect approach would be inevitable for children to get familiar with having insects as food.

Very interesting to hear that there's actually a store that sells insect food in Korea, Alberta. I still have some prejudice so I won't like it, but it shows that insects can actually be one of the potential food source in the future. Thanks for sharing!

I think I actually saw this store on TV. I don't plan to visit,, but seems interesting and fun haha.. D Did you know a venture company in the US invented a 'bleeding' vegetarian burger? According to the people who tried it, the burger tastes just the same as any other 'ordinary' burger. I guess this can help people go green easier than before :D

This is the amazing power of this unique platform,. Thanks Alberta for introducing 'Insect Food'. Individually I may never have it due to my dilatory preferences but this concept is gaining popularity. If it does not harm our environment, it will definitely gain popularity.

When I read the idea of insect food, I felt weird. The first thing that came up to my mind was '' People are weird. They even eat insects as food:('' , but after reading all the comments below and doing some google research, I found out the advantages and now I am thinking only about an easier and a good financial way of opening an insect food cafe in Uzbekistan. I think finding insect cookers will be quite difficult. Although I will keep it in mind as a future plan. Thanks for the encouraging report

Earlier this year, I competed for a 5,000 USD grant to implement palm weevil project in Ghana. Although, I couldn't win, I still see the idea of insect farming to be very important in our global ecological footprint. Thank you for the report

It was wonderful to read this. Insect food is just recently getting the recognition it deserves. Although I myself have never ingested any insects, there are entire communities in Kenya that have been eating insects as part of their diet since time immemorial and if I may say so myself, it's been, and still is, going good for them. Insects definitely do hold the key to keeping food crises at bay. They're also quite nutritious.

On first read, even I found the idea of 'insect food' disgusting more so because I am 100% vegetarian. But I have googled to know more about it . I understand from various news pieces and reports that Entomophagy(human consumption of insects as food) can solve world's food and water shortage problem as :

    1. Farming insects is better for the environment than other protein-rich foods, like pigs or cows. Insects are easier to raise, use less water, feed on waste materials, and produce less greenhouse gasses than other livestock.
    2. Insects are not harmful to eat. They are nutritious, they have a lot of protein and are considered a delicacy in many countries.
    3. insects don't compete with the human food supply.
4.Some species of insects are drought resistant and may require less water than cows, pigs or poultry.
    5. Insects could not only serve as a food source for humans, but could be a food source for animals that humans raise for food. Insect-farming operations could provide income for people in rural areas, as well.

Having said all that, there is a need to develop technologies and techniques to grow them in large numbers and explore potential allergies.
    Thanks for an interesting report.
