Sustainable Transport

The transportation system has evolved tremendously over the last century. The earlier transportation systems were cent percent green as animals were used as a carrier as the engines were not invented. While we started using fossil fuels for transportation in the last century, the usage of electricity was also very popular. Some of the Train, bus & tram services were electricity driven. We may consider it as green as there is no emission but arguably electricity generation in the first place requires burning of fossil fuels also besides hydro power which in green. The major problematic area is emission of harmful gases while the Sustainable Transport in practically emission free.

In the early years of this century more sustainable transport system have been developed where we started using Solar Power & Batteries for power generation for transportation.

This month I visited my homeland India & I stayed in New Delhi & Mumbai for major parts of my vacation. I have noticed that both the cities have adopted Sustainable Transport systems for public transportation. Usage of Electricity driven Suburban Trains, CNG Buses & Taxis, Battery driven vehicles were widespread in Mumbai. You will not miss the green vehicle passing by if you happen to be on the road for even 10 minutes in Mumbai.

I was also amazed by the advent of many Sustainable Transport systems in New Delhi. The electric powered metro trains are carrying More than 2.6 Million passengers a day & recently on 17-Aug-16 it carried an all-time high 3.3 million passengers on a single day. This is staggering number is any city in any part of this world. Besides this, all public transport system in New Delhi uses CNG as a fuel. This is a great step in developing a dependable Sustainable Transport system.

Besides all this usage of human driven cycle rickshaw is very common & widespread in New Delhi. It involves a great effort to pull the rickshaw & it causes long term weakness & other diseases. The advent of e-rickshaw in New Delhi is a breather in this direction. It is battery driven & van run for 8-10 hours on a single charge. It is a win-win situation for both driver, passenger & environment. No fatigue for driver as paddling is not involved & involves a minimum skill level to drive, the speed of the vehicle is fast & price is cheap therefore it is beneficial for the passenger & last and foremost it is eco-friendly & is sustainable to the core.

This time on my vacations I made sure to use e-rickshaw for my personal transportation needs & I feel proud for the same.
