Actions to counter climate change

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of the world in recent years. This phenomenon is already showing in many places, including Colombia. The last rainy season (2010-2011) showed a Colombia vulnerable to the consequences of climate change such as floods. These events bring millions of economic losses and loss of quality of life of the victims. From this event showed the importance of incorporating climate change into national development plans and thus be prepared for the different events that can bring this phenomenon.

Given the need to incorporate climate change into sustainable development, UNDP has launched an initiative entitled "Towards low carbon Territories and resilient to climate change" that seeks to collaborate and support governments that wish to participate and be part of the adaptation and climate change mitigation. The purpose is to circulate information and experiences on best practices for accost the challenge of climate change. With this initiative came Territorial Approach to Climate Change (TACC) you want to "increase resilience to the impacts of climate change and reduce the carbon footprint of the sub-national territories in developing countries and countries with economies in transition"(UNEP, 2009).

Colombia is one of the first pilot countries identified for this initiative and the process takes place in the Capital Region (Bogota-Cundinamarca) as who has shown interest and commitment on climate change. The project "Plan Regional Integral del Cambio Climatico Region Capital Bogota-Cundinamarca"(PRICC), aims to support the capacity building of national and regional authorities to integrate climate change into spatial planning. This process will include the definition of strategies and investment plans in response to climate change in order to promote development options robust enough to withstand various weather conditions future. This process increases the strategies and adaptation and mitigation projects in the Capital Region. (PRICC, 2010)

Build and promote sustainable cities is a task for now, for this is to put aside the alleged myths about climate change and take it as a reality that affects everyone. This plan will bring more capital-region prepared to future climatic and environmental changes and will be a global example of responsibility of governments to be part of change. Actions may come from the particular to the general that everyone can be part of this achievement and be an active player in the implementation of the various mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change. All this to meet green cities seek social and environmental well-being does not jeopardize the quality of life of future generations.
