DUBAI has proudly marked a green milestone by undertaking a project that converts household trash into energy ,a first-of-its-kind in the GCC region.
Dubai Municipality Al-Qusais landfill has successfully generated 1MW electricity from the garbage collected and it is now used to power the entire site.
The initiative underlined the ?green economy for sustainable development? vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.
Modelled on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to about 250,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Now, work is in progress to generate 20MW of power from landfill gas by the year 2020.
Such initiatives are very important for cities like Dubai. It highlights how we care about the environment, and how we are keen to develop sustainable energy and reduce harmful impact on our environment
