Forum on appropriate technology

What is appropriate technology? It is considered one of the most popular terms in the 21st century, but no one seems to know the correct definition of this term. I want to introduce this term today because I think everyone who is interested in environmental protection ought to know it.

Appropriate technology was an idea propagated by a economist named Schumacher in his influential book "Small is Beautiful".
According to Hazeltine B. and Anthony Akubue, appropriate technology is generally recognized as encompassing technological choice and application that is small-scale, decentralized, labor intensive, energy-efficient, environmentally sound, and locally controlled. Both Schumacher and many modern-day proponents of appropriate technology also emphasized that the technology should be centered on people not on multinational conglomerates. Appropriate technology is interested in sustainability and so, is suitable for a century that has its utmost concern in sustainability. More importantly, as mentioned before, it takes account of the environmental and economic conditions of a region that it is being used on.

Developed countries and countless organizations provide financial aids to third world countries. However, these aids render third world countries dependent on foreign support. Developed countries cannot grant these aids forever and in some point, third world countries would have to fend for themselves. In a world where state of affairs change rapidly, one cannot expect consistent aids. Appropriate technology is what could help third world countries stand on their own and achieve continuous growth/

Last year, I attended an Appropriate Technology Forum. I had to complete a homework which was to interview the author of a book I had read, and the author invited my friends and I to this forum. We were able to listen to lectures from people who were currently leading the field of appropriate technology in Korea. They were researching methods that could improve water quality in countries that suffer from lack of clean water. One of the examples they have shown us was the life straw. It was a straw with a built-in filter which people could even drink from muddy river waters. Another example was the G-saver which was a small heater invented to reduce fuel consumption. The inventors also constructed factories so that people can produce G-savers as much as they wanted and can fix them if they were broken.

How can we promote "Appropriate technology" so that major companies also adopt it into their system? :-)
