LITTERING IN KENYA AND HOW UPCYCLING COULD BE A POTENTIAL SOLUTION |

Littering is a big problem in Kenya. I could go on to rant about the implications of this but I couldn't say it any better than Tony Ngare who wrote an article entitled 'A Litany on Litter' on Standard's Sunday newspaper dated 6th April, 2014. You can find the article here.
The obvious immediate solution to curb littering is to stop littering altogether and observe proper disposal of litter. There is a petition to this effect. The petition is called Clean Up Kenya and was created with the dream of a litter-free Kenya. It is quite a proactive initiative. However, I think it would like much better when coupled with the 3Rs which would mean that there would be a lesser amount of waste, all of which would be disposed properly. This is where upcycling comes in. Upcycling is reusing discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. This idea is not new to Kenya as there are already start-ups and businesses by young entrepreneurs and innovators that turn trash into cash, although not literally. However, upcycling is not exclusive to entrepreneurs rather it is something that all of us can do. I scoured the web to look for various ideas on upcycling projects, of which I found many interesting ideas of varying difficulties ranging from simple to ones that require intricate artistic skills. Upcycling has also been making a big splash in fashion with what is called Trash Fashion or 'Trashion'. |

Like you say in your article about waste management, the 3R formula is necessary but in some countries where some letter are in the formula are unsed cause of the weakness of thechnology in these countries. But I think the one that anyone in any country can work on is resusing or Valorisation of waste. And in the new principles of waste management 3RV-E( Reduction,Recycling, Reusing, Valorisation and Elimination) we can work on three of them despite your weak technology.
Thank you for sharing Yvonne

Thanks for the beautiful pictures Yvonne! I read the comments and I think what Minjoo said is that you also have to provide references for the pictures that do now show the source. I see some of them have watermarks on the pictures but some of them don't. Thanks for paying more attention to reference, and have a good weekend!

Yeah, I have heard and read a lot about litter problem in Kenya. It needs to change and improve for better lives and better environment. You are right that people must minimise waste/litter and this is possible if they follow 3 Rs and think of upcycling. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Yvonee for letting us know about recycling and upcycling in Kenya. It is sad to hear that people do not consider littering as a serious problem, but there's still potential for changing their attitudes! But next time, please note the references(especially about the images)! Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

Bonsoir et merci Tchaptchet! Comme j'ai mentionneais, il y a plusieurs des initiatives qui utilisent le concept de 'upcycling'. Oui, le concept demandes la creativite, mais on pouvent le faire si on essaye.

Thank you Tchaptchet! As I have mentioned, there are several initiatives by innovative youths that turn upcycling into actual businesses. These youths go ahead to use the many they make to pay for their education and to sustain their families. They also raise awareness on the effect that littering has on the environment. They encourage others to reuse, reduce, recycle, and upcycle, as the trash is way to much to be handled by them alone and would otherwise just be filling up landfills. Yes, it requires creativity, but we are all creative, in our own ways. You can learn more about trashion on www.trashionfashion.org or at trashion.mit.edu
