On September 12, 2016, at 7:44 PM and 8:32 PM, South Korea experienced its largest earthquake ever. Earthquakes are said to be common in nearby Japan, but the sudden earthquake in Korea surprised everyone in the country. The earthquake occurred in one of Korea's major cities, Gyeongju, and recorded magnitudes of
5.1 and
5.8.
The important question is, "What exactly caused the Gyeongju earthquake?" There is currently no clear evidence of why or how the earthquake occurred. However, most experts are claiming that it is an effect of Japan's major earthquake in March of 2011. There have been many aftershocks following the quake in 2011. One of its aftershocks took place in Kyushu, Japan, and because this occurred on the Eurasian Plate (which includes South Korea), seismologists say that it had a more powerful impact on the peninsula.
Although experts assert that there will be no major earthquakes in the near future in South Korea, citizens are extremely worried and have doubts. The earthquake was unexpected, shook many people's homes, and disrupted many lives. I, on a family trip in Jeju Island, even felt the ground shake while watching TV. Although no perilous earthquakes are expected, I believe that Korea should take action in measuring seismic activities more sensitively and not be ignorant about the incident. Even deadlier earthquakes might occur in the future around the world, and South Korea should not be oblivious to this danger.

Thanks for sharing the news Soo. The earthquake was quite a shock. Especially more so considering Korea was thought to be on the safe side from the catastrophes that can be caused by the earthquake. I'm intrigued to see how this event will start to unfold the social and political chaos and mismanagement. Thanks for sharing

Dear Soo, I read about this earthquake in news as well. I am well familiar how this natural disaster fears our psychology as just one year ago my country Nepal had two intense earthquake taking over 9000 human lives and other incalculable physical losses. Earthquakes are unpredictable all we can do is get yourself prepared and aware with the safety measures.

Thanks for sharing, Soo! I also experienced a slight shake when I was studying at the school library. The messenger was also not working during the earthquake. Experts say Korea needs to protect its citizens from a big earthquake that comes every 400 years. That seems quite long, but no one knows when it will happen. Have a great day!
