Eco-Musicians: Vol. 2

by | 17-08-2013 01:32 recommendations 0

This is the second vol. of my eco-musicians compilation. Please sent me the feedbacks??? :)

Coldplay:  Over the years, Coldplay has continuously been quite vocal about their beliefs on environmental protection as well as fair trade, using the stage as a promotional platform. Recently, the band partnered with ?Client Earth?, a group that enforces environmental laws throughout different countries, working with local governments and local green groups. The band has also pioneered strategies such as carbon neutral CDs and tree planting in areas that struggle economically.

Sheryl Crow: When it comes to America?s environmental commitment, this bluesy rock singer-songwriter believes a change small would do us much good. Some of her eco-initiatives have been filling her trucks and buses with B20 biodiesel fuel, implementing extensive waste reduction and recycling backstage and on buses, offering local and organic food backstage and calculating and neutralizing the carbon footprint from tour buses, trucks, flights and venue energy use by supporting renewable energy. She estimates that she has removed more than one million pounds of CO2 through recent efforts to make her music sustainable. Her and ?Cold play? both were among the pioneers of CO2 neutral CD?s

Maroon 5: Known for their commitment to the environment, Maroon 5 was honored at the 2006 Environmental Media Awards and recently pledged their time and energy toward ?Global Cool?, a newly launched initiative to fight global warming by motivating a billion people worldwide to reduce their personal energy use. REVERB first worked with Maroon 5 on their 2008 tour.

Jesse Carmichael, keyboardist for Maroon 5 says: ?As we make little baby steps, we get more and more people interested in making tours sustainable and more and more aspects of all of our lives sustainable. And hopefully just get some information and spread it around to people, and we?ll all do what we can and things will move forward in a good way.?

Bonnie Raitt: Raitt?s musical and environmental careers seem virtually unstoppable. Raitt might be the artist with the longest list of green credentials on this list, as she started Musicians United for Safe Energy in 1979. She?s helped host five ?No Nukes? concerts, and in 2007, Raitt worked with Jackson Browne, Graham Nash and energy activists Harvey Wasserman and Tom Campbell to set up NukeFree.org. Raitt tours using B99 bio-fuel. This rocker has not only been an activist for the environment herself, but helps to inspire and recognize others who have done the same. In her tours, she has eco-villages set up with examples and information given out to concert goers to help spread the word. She also co-founded the Musicians United for Safe Energy Group, which fights nuclear power usage.

Guster: In 2004, Guster guitarist Adam Gardner and his wife Lauren Sullivan started REVERB, one of the most influential environmental non-profits working in conjunction with the music industry. According to the organization?s website, REVERB ?educates and engages musicians and their fans to take action toward a more sustainable future.? They?re working with ?Fun? and ?J. Cole? and some of their most famous partners include other exceptionally green musicians like Dave Matthews Band, Sheryl Crow and Phish and Maroon 5.

As a band, Guster has also taken measures to green their own tours, using biodiesel, recycling, composting, ordering local and organic food, and supplying eco-friendly merchandise, among other efforts. Plus, fans who show off their green practices to the band can win tickets to Guster shows and meet-and-greet passes

Dave Mathews Band: In the green arena, this group has outdone itself nearly every time it has hit the road. Dave Mathews has experimented with biodiesel for touring vehicles and often looks for ways to make his merchandise environmentally friendly. Using these and other methods, such as carbon offsetting practices to reduce the impact of touring, the band has reduced their carbon footprint by nearly 3 million pounds of CO2. Expect more eco-innovation from these environmental champions as they push the envelope with carpooling and an eco-village for fans of the band.

Thom Yorke/Radiohead: Thom Yorke, the lead singer for the band Radiohead, has been involved with several efforts to bring awareness to the changing environment. His group is known for promoting as many environmentally conscious actions as possible while on tour, including using biofuel on tour buses. They also try to get their fans and concert goers involved in their efforts by playing shows where the venues are supported by public transportation. In 2009, Yorke attended the UN conference for climate change in Copenhagen.

After realizing the financial and environmental costs incurred on their tour in support of Hail to the Thief, Radiohead has taken drastic measures to green their tours and their daily actions. They?ve sent instruments and gear by ship, as to reduce carbon emissions. They?ve planted trees as they tour. They even partnered with Friends of the Earth in a campaign to convince the European Union to commit to a plan in which greenhouse gas emissions are reduced 30% reduction by 2020.

I posted them because I think that they have inspired others and helped them too. So, if you lack inspiration, you can always check them out!!
