Uganda is a country that has a lot of natural resources and physical features consisting of the Savannah plateau with mountains, rivers, and lakes. The lake Victoria, source of river Nile , and the misty Rwenzori mountains makes and all the natural amenities makes Uganda the? Pearl of Africa?.

In Uganda we have different government agencies that are helping in managing, regulating, coordinating and supervising environmental activities to ensure sustainable development.

The top most agency is the National Environment Management Authority, This is a body that was established in May 1995 and it is still at the forefront in the monitoring and regulations of activities imposed on the environment.

Second is the Uganda Wild Life Authority that regulates wildlife conservation in Uganda. They conserve and manage the wildlife and protected areas of Uganda. They partner with the different stakeholders and bodies for the cause.

Others are National Forestry Authority and ministry of water and the environment.

However different non-governmental organization have come up to support the environmental conservation cause. The non-profit organization have at profoundly improved on the nature of the environment in Uganda. These include

Uganda?s little hands go green organization

This is a civil society organization that spearheads environmental conservation education among children. These are using children as the main drivers of environmental conservation. This organization has influenced many children to care for their environment.

Recently on 11th September, the organization organized a Green festival for children. The president of Uganda also attended this festival and he planted a symbolic tree with the children at the event. It was aimed at enlightening children on the values of conserving our environment through fun engaging activities.

Nature Uganda

This is aims at contributing to biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management at both national and international levels. People are considered central in execution of tasks and benefit that accrue. This promotes sustainable and equitable use of resources. It has taken an initiative to enhance knowledge of Uganda?s natural history advocated for policies that are friendly to the environment and has taken action to conserve priority species sites and habitats.

Nature Uganda in partnership with BIRD-LIFE has introduced events like bird watching and conferences for awareness. For example the international vulture awareness day conference that took place on 3rd September 2016.

Chimpanzee sanctuary and wild life conservation

This is a non-governmental organization that was established in October 1998 by partnership of local and international conservation organization. Its purpose is the long term care and welfare of confiscated orphaned chimpanzees from poachers and illegal traders with no chance of survival in wild. The organization has helped to rescue various chimpanzees.

NATURE HARNESS INITIATIVE (NAHI)

This is a non-environmental organization, Ugandan based that promotes market based mechanisms for improved natural resources management. This organization is informed by the background that social and economic returns will determine how individuals manage natural resources.  It works with private businesses to better manage their environmental foot print and communities to derive sustained benefits from natural resources.

It is important to note that many non-governmental organizations are coming up to ensure environmental protection and conservation in Uganda. Many international organizations are also coming up to support the local organizations to conserve the ecologically sensitive areas which are significantly important to the nation.

With this therefore it would be unjustifiable if I don?t talk about Tunza for this case because as a newly appointed Ambassador to Uganda, I aspire to creating a more significant impact onto the protection and conservation of the environment role in my country Uganda.

Thanks for the introduction Joanita! and also i'm glad to hear more about Uganda now. If there is an organization you are a part of, we'll be happy to know! It's saddening that the chimpanzees are poached down. Well, you can also expand the discussion as to what kinds of benefits the poachers get from their illegal actions, monetary attraction, the world market, etc Thanks!

Joanita, thanks for introducing such various environmental organizations in Uganda. Above all, I especially became interested in Uganda's little hands go green organization. How is the organization influencing children to save the environment? Is it providing any education program? And what activities do the children mostly participate? Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
