Israel: UN Habitat Thematic Meeting

The UN Habitat Conference have a range of Thematic Meetings happening around the world preavious to the main conference, which is meant to be sort of a preparation for the UN - Habitat Conference. Likewise, in the thematic Meeting it is discussed relevant topics regarding human settlement, sustainable development, eco urbanism and ways of transforming cities sustainable and general urban challenges.

In Tel Aviv it was hostes a Thematic Meeting as part of the Habitat III preparatory process. As a big city, Tel Aviv have a variety of challenges that can represent a barrier to the achievement of a more sustainable city. Some of this challenges vary from immigration, sustainable infraestructure, population growth and civic participation.

The Thematic Meeting will then discuss such issues at the global level in preparation for Habitat III that ensures to address them in Quito, in October 2016. Tel-Aviv?s Smart City initiatives prioritize civic engagement and public participation. The city has been recognized for its unique approach to open data, transparency, citizen engagement and collaboration among public, private and third sector organizations. Tel-Aviv is committed to open, transparent government and to an engaged citizenry, and to using technology to promote these values. Discussions are expected to center on the challenges and opportunities posed by information and communication technologies for cities, and to result in the formulation of appropriate guidelines for the implementation of smart technologies in the urban sphere. Tel Aviv is considered to be one of the most advanced cities when it comes to mobility and urbanism, mainly due to its strong hi-tech industry. Therefore, the Thematic Meeting was able to gather experts, activists, scholars and civil society to share new ways of transforming cities through sustainable development.

    I know how the Israeli have managed to change barren soil to fertile land, good enough to grow crops, but didn't know much about how Tel Aviv has been putting emphasis on becoming a greener city! It'd be great to hear more about it, perhaps in your next reports? Thanks for uploading and take care!
