Nepal has developed many varieties in rice that give higher yield in shorter time period than the local varieties. Because of the lack of irrigation, inputs and manpower, the imbalance between the production and consumption has been growing every year. The rise in the urban population and the increasing disposable income of the Nepalese has led to the change in the food habit from local cereals to fine aromatic rice varieties. This leads to food deficit with negative grain balance. This has also lead to increased dependency on India and china for both rice imports in term of seed and grain.
An estimates showed that the farmers valued NPR 19 per Kg extra for high yielding aromatic traits. The aromatic traits of rice generate an extra NPR 11 billion per annum for Nepal. Therefore, It is urgently required to identify aromatic fine rice varieties with better yield to reduce the import of rice from the foreign country. The Government of Nepal has launched the special program for the promotion of fine aromatic varieties.
The identification of better aromatic varieties not only lead to import substitution but also fulfill the increasing national demand. The aim of the research is to assess the growth and productivity of indigenous fine aromatic rice cultivar in Chitwan. It aids in exploring, identifying and evaluating the local landraces collected from different parts of the country and their performances. Research will help farmers to manage crops at their local level and also in establishment of community seed bank. Ten Indigenous Varieties of Researched Rice :

Developing new varieties of rice is essential in gearing towards climate change. In fact, here in the Philippines, several varieties of rice have already been developed and even two of them were salt-tolerant and flood-resistant. This report of yours was very scientific! I will be expecting a more in-depth one next time. Hahaha. Anyway, if you're really into crop science, specifically rice, may be you'll become interested with the bioactive compounds derived from rice. I'm planning to conduct a study about that soon. Haha. The best!

Thanks for such an informative report, Sujan! I believe it is a great choice for the Nepal government to develop on variety of rice, since the monopoly of one rice is very weak at environmental disaster or market change. Thanks for sharing, and have a great day!
