Management of mineral exploitation

by | 11-10-2016 23:34 recommendations 0

The Tanzania economy depends upon mineral resources for a key source of its revenue. However mineral exploitation is done without respect to the environment and social effects.Hence mineral exploitation is conducted without looking impact in the community.

Mining activities a major cause of environmental degradation for example deforestation, chemicals discharged into the rivers, lakes and water source areas, destruction of habitat, loss of biodiversity and general damage to the land.

Most of mining activities (local and registered companies) do not follow instructions to keep environment safe place.Discharging chemicals into rivers leads to harmful health to villagers and death of species.

However Tanzania through its mining act of 1998 addressed this problem and required mining companies to conduct mining assessment.

It is very important to manage mineral exploitation. Some of the environmental problems associated with mining include creation of vast wastelands, pollution of groundwater, air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution and land pollution. Creating legislation to govern mining is a good place to start.

It is sad that mining companies there do not keep environment in mind inspite of the 1998 legislation calling for mining assessment. Thanks for sharing.
