Greenest City: Copenhagen

by | 25-10-2016 01:34 recommendations 0

Hi Friends!

Today's article is about the Greenest City of our Planet, Copenhagen. I have shared some features that have made Copenhagen the Greenest City.

With the title of European Greenest Capital 2014 and the nickname 'Capital of Sustainable meetings', Copenhagen is regarded as one of the crucial and most sustainable environmentally-friendly capital cities on the planet. Additionally, it is also considered Europe's most sustainable city.

Here are some of the innovative ideas that have made Copenhagen reach the top spot!

Biking Culture in Copenhagen: Copenhagen is well known for its biking culture and even has its own biking Embassy! Statistics showed that 36% of Copenhageners daily ride their bike to work this mainly due to the municipal policies that motivate a bike-friendly design of the city. Copenhagen offers 390 kilometers of designated bike lanes.

Light House in Copenhagen: The fairway Lighthouse is Copenhagen?s first carbon neutral public building. This university building was constructed in 2009 and is the outcome of a public-private partnership. Architecturally, the building was inspired by the sundial and the action of the sun around a building. Clever integration of daylight has been used in the design of the structure, and sunlight received during the daytime is the primary source of energy for this innovative structure. The energy concept of the apartment combines district heating, solar cells, sunlight heating and cooling, and seasonal storage. Due to the architectural design and the energy efficiency, the green Lighthouse makes use of 75% less energy than general buildings.

Pocket Parks: A pocket park is a small park available to the general public. It is mostly created on irregular pieces of land. These pocket parks provide various services to the general public such as: spaces for relaxation, meeting friends, taking lunch breaks, reading a book, play areas for children etc. Generally pocket parks are positioned around a monument, a historical building or in relation to an art project. Furthermore, pocket parks can probably relieve pressure from the larger parks, also enabling the government to commit larger areas of the parks to habitat and ecological functions.

I always wanted to go to Northern European countries but so far never had the right time and chance. I did visit Amsterdam for a short trip though and it was impressive to see loads of people biking around the city rather than in their cars. I assume it'd be similar in Copenhagen. To be more like these bike-friendly cities, the size of the city should be adequate and not to big. I guess that is one of the main reasons why we can't see more of worldly popular cities taking the same path with that of Copenhagen. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing, Nilanjan! I have never noticed people in Copenhagen love to ride bikes! In my country, people usually go to businesses that are far from their home, so most of them take public transportation or personal vehicles. I hope to visit there once. Have a great day : )
