World Climate Simulation at the University for Development Studies, Wa Campus

by | 25-10-2016 06:14 recommendations 0

The World Climate Simulation in the University for Development Studies, Wa campus was attended by students from the department of environmental Management Studies, graduate students from the faculty for integrated development studies and representatives from the Climate Change Initiative and food security organization.

The event started with an introduction to Climate Change, its impact and the objective of world climate event by Desmond Alugnoa who co-facilitated the event together with Joshua Amponsem and Commander Lawson Akanteba. There was a five minutes question and answers time to ensure delegates understood what they were expected to do and this sparked an argument on the topic as delegates were already indicating the blocks they wish to represent.

There were 65 participants grouped into the 6 geographic blocks while assigning Mr Akanteba Lawson, an army commander from Bole and Environmentalist as the executive secretary of UNFCCC, three representatives from the Climate Change Initiative and Food security organization were put under the Climate Activist block while Desmond Alugnoa simulated as the UN secretary General.   Briefing notes were given to the appropriate blocs and later on the Nationally Determined Contributions distributed to the 6 regions.

Joshua Amponsem, a World Climate Ambassador and the Executive Director for Green Africa Youth Organization, led the house to open the first round of negotiations. All the six blocks were given thirty (30) minutes to discuss the briefing materials and pledge their commitments to the house through the proposal forms.

After submitting their NDCs (proposal), C-ROADS was launched and the submitted data was inserted. After putting all the data together, we reached a global warming of 2.5degC even though other Developing countries made interesting commitments as committing fully to REDD and Afforestation while demanding a scary amount of $90b per year. India made an encouraging proposal to stop their emissions by the year 2080 and to start declining their emissions by 2095 whilst committing $10b to the global fund. China?s nationally Determined Contribution was however on a low side as they pledged only $2b to the global fund and a 5% fractional rate of decline.

Unable to meet the 1.5 to 2.0degC a second round of negotiations was mandatory. Joshua Amoponsem, motivated a participants by giving a short speech - ?All countries must develop and that is vital to people. But what about planet? The only habitable planet that can sustain life. As you think of people, also think of planet. Without Earth, there will be no people. Make this commitment for planet and for people.? With this, Desmond Alugnoa furthered to say that ?Our existence is non-negotiable? and then, we opened the second part of the event. To ignite more passion among delegates, the UN Secretary General-Desmond Alugnoa told everyone to put themselves in the shoes of their respective heads of states and strive to draft a firm and robust resolution at the end of the event.

At this stage, all parties went back to the drawing table to make adjustment to their pledges. The Climate Activist group was seen putting pressure on the US, China and EU to bring their emission growth stop year and the decline start year forward as well as increasing their contributions to the global fund for mitigation and adaptation. This led China and the EU to raise their financial contributions from $2b and $4b to $8b and $20b respectively. The US also increased their contribution to $40b and their afforestation from 0.3 to 0.8 whilst committing fully to prevent deforestation.

India demanded that China and the US be made to contribute 60% of the global fund. US and the EU promised full tuition scholarship to students from African countries and India who wish to study any Climate Change related courses on their soil.

This round of negotiations spanned for 50 minutes and all regions came up with new commitments. After inserting the figures to C-ROADS, the global warming decreased significantly to 1.8degC and the whole house was thrown into a mood of jubilation.

During the debrief participants expressed their views of the event as seen below:

Abuura Rosina: "it is really not an easy process but it is empowering, our leaders have been trying. I think we need to have these kind of the programs every semester to help many people understand the toughness in arriving at decisions as every country is economically conscious"

Yamba Diana: 'Oh my God, this is a nice conference. I feel responsible right now. I want to be a Climate Change negotiator, representing Ghana at UN conferences.'

Desmond Alugnoa: 'Participating is one thing but facilitating is very great. You see the expression of participants in a diverse way and you feel a burden of motivating delegates to arrive at a temperature lesser than 2degC. I really enjoyed it and I will urge everyone to use C-Roads.'
