Sustainable Development Goals

by Adam Zhou | 28-10-2016 21:00 recommendations 0

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are targets set by the United Nations for all citizens by the year 2030. Looking at mainly three aspects, those being end extreme poverty, fight inequality, and fix climate change, the SDGs have a major role in relation to the environment as the latter aspect states. Out of the 17 total goals, the main ones that fit into that category are numbers 13, 14, and 15, or Climate Action, Life Below Water, and Life on Land respectively. Especially in a world where economic and technological advancements are the focus for development, SDGs 13, 14, and 15 are crucial to emphasise for the wellbeing of not only the environment, but also mankind itself.

However, this is not the case. Several professional surveys (such as that of Corporate Citizenship) show that more than half of businesses worldwide don?t comply with and even ignore the SDGs. In addition, the same survey found that the location that was most engaged with achieving them were Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, while the lowest rate of engagement (at 37%) was in North America. It is still fortunate, on the other hand, that the tackling of the SDG Climate Action was the most popular amongst businesses and organizations overall, with a large majority coming from developed nations.

In order for the goals to be fully achieved by the given date, businesses must especially take action, seeing that the bulk of results in development (not just economically but societally and environmentally) come from those sources. This can be achieved by thorough brainstorming regarding predicted impacts and rates on people as well as the environment, and from this set goals (miniscule in comparison but still relevant to SDGs). Leaders can also give incentives to employees to complete targets for more efficiency.

Solutions are not only based amongst larger scales of society. On the other hand, it is largely dependent on individuals as well. The UN has announced to what they call ?The Lazy Person?s Guide to Saving the World? in accordance to the SDGs and this consists of three levels, these being things to do at your couch, at home and outside your home. The first simply consists of saving electricity, campaigning online, be informed on global issues, among many more. The second is to recycle, eat less red meat and fish, use energy-efficient technology, while on an even larger scale, the highest level suggests us to shop local, use public transportation and donate. More information can be found on this link: http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/takeaction/

To conclude, Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations once said, ?Ours can be the first generation to end poverty – and the last generation to address climate change before it is too late." Why not let this generation be us?

Thank you, Adam for the very realistic article. We have very good goals, objectives, policies, etc, but the problem remains with the implementation phase and a lot of people tend to overlook that fact. Hence, this report of yours was a really good reminder for everyone to take action even at a micro level since no matter how small their action is, it will greatly contribute to the global scale once accumulated.

Thanks for sharing, Adam! The SDGs are necessary to keep our earth from environmental pollution and other human disasters. Since the goals are broad and universal, they can cover most of the existing problems and global citizens. However, since there's no forced power to reach the goals, each individual's voluntary effort is required. Have a great day : )

The SDGs are like a great big sustainability buffet. They address everything from poverty, hunger, health care, and education through to protecting marine ecosystems and terrestrial ecosystems, and everything in between. Basically all the components necessary to ensure healthy people, a healthy economy, and a healthy planet in the years ahead.
These goals are universal and they demonstrate that it is incumbent upon all sectors, all levels of government, and all citizens and civil society actors to root themselves in the SDGs and continuous improvement. It's all of our shared collective responsibility to take action to ensure a sustainable world for future generations.
    Thanks for the report.
