documentSettings> documentSettings> In October, I went to different schools that participated in the essay competitions to give them some prizes to boost them. Very many children enthusiastically participated in the competition and I was choosing the best three. The essay was about climate change. Children that participated were between age of 8 and 13 years. The winners were mostly children in candidate classes and they were going to sit for their primary leaving Examinations the following day. I gave them pens and success cards in the name of Tunza- Eco-generation. I chose all the participants as leaders and I advised them to go out to the rest of the children in their communities and friends to tell about climate change. We are therefore running awareness with this children and every new day very many children and youths are getting involved in the environmental activities.Am first dealing with rural schools.
In the month of October, there was also an exhibition at my college. And in this exhibitions there were a lot of innovations but basically I got to look out for Eco-friendly innovations. And among these, there were locally made sanitary pads called makapads that are biodegradable. These pads are made from papyrus and paper waste. The fibers are beaten, dried and soften using no electricity. They are assembled with a moisture barrier and mesh covering. Makapads can be purchased with or with or without an adhesive that slips into knickers with special elastics to hold the pad in place. The benefits of these pads compared to the other sanitary pads is that they are 95% bio degradable, made from local papyrus, uses little electricity. These are innovations by a lecturer at my University. There were also cooking stops molded out of interlocking, and on addition they use briquettes. They can cook for more than 12 hours. There was also a project that could be used to pump water for irrigation. This being a country where agriculture is the top most activity that the country depends on. This project would help pump water from the water bodies to the agricultural lands without using electricity but while using butteries and solar energy.I rounded up the run by looking at the different architectural designs and physical planning designs where in which I realized that green was taken into maxi um consideration. The plans had 70% of green.
In the same month I got involved in a clean-up exercise which was organized to clean one of the slums. This exercise was organized by a Non –governmental organisation called Shelter and settlement alternatives. I got involved in sweeping planting trees, trimming bushes and people embraced the exercise and promised to carry it on every last Saturday of the month. Many participated including the children, youth and elderly people. Early this month I went for conference which was organised by Konrad Adevenueur stiftung which was ?before the flood?, a documentary featuring Leonardo di Caprio. After watching the documentary, a lot struck my mind and it should be a must watch for each and every one on this platform. It is an eye opener and I think after watching it one would feel like dropping down a sob in the name of our mother earth. In this conference various people rose up to commit themselves on what they are going to do to protect nature from climate change. In this cinema, i encountered with the lady who took the initiative to give us and we planted 11,000 bamboo seedling in 35 minutes. Over 450 youths came up to join us for the event and this was amidst the heavy rains and due to love for mother earth a lot of people came about to join in. And in this month, the struggle continues.
