First Week Over, Second Week of COP22 Beckons

by | 14-11-2016 10:18 recommendations 0

The first week of the 22nd session of the conference of Parties ongoing in Marrakech ended on Friday with huge uncertainty thrown into the discussions by the outcome of the presidential elections in the USA. There are fears that with Donald Trump wining the poll, he may have the US withdrawn from he Paris agreement or even pull out of some climate initiatives especially the $100 billion climate fund.
However, there was succor when China confirmed that it is sticking with the agreement and that whatever happens with the USA will not affect her commitment in this regard.
As I had written in my last article, climate finance is the rallying point for the most part of this conference and talks are already on for a road-map for it which has gained the support of countries like Canada and Australia. The group of African countries also want to see this come to fruition but there are strong feeling that the $100 billion fund is not enough for the ambition and reasonable realization of the Paris agreement. Countries of the Global South need huge support from the biggest emitters to be able to pursue their adaption commitments in this regard.

As the second week of COP22 starts today, Ministers are expected to arrive and talks will get more political as this is usually the decision week at every COP. It is still uncertain what will be the position of the developed countries in terms of contributions to the funds but it important to point out that most of the big emitting nations have been non-committal in their stance. It is very unlikely this will change.
The COP22 presidency also prepared the "Marrakech Call" to be a non-binding declaration or outcome of the COP22 and we will see in the next days how this develops and if it will be well received by parties.

I arrived Marrakech on Saturday afternoon and will be on for the entire duration of the decision week at the blue zone. The COP22 popularly referred to as the "COP of Action" is expected to officially come to an end by Friday, November 18th, 2016 but a 24-hour extension will not be a surprise going by recent history. The city of Marrakech and the government of Morocco have been so welcoming. There is a lot of entertainment in Marrakech and the people are lovely. They are so happy to receive such large visitors in their country. The government of Morocco even provided free shuttle buses for accredited COP22 participants from the Casablanca airport to Marakech or from the Marrakech airport to the city center or Medina. It is all lovely in this colourful country. Business resumes at the blue zone tomorrow.

Thanks for writing about your travel Udeh! Yeah it seems Trump is readjusting his previous statements, knowing how reality is different from what he had suspected. I hope in that process, he realizes going back to the carbon age is not such a brilliant idea. Thanks for wriitng :D

Thanks for sharing, Udeh! Though Trump really became the new US president, I hope he will change his decisions regarding the agreement. Since his words are changing continuously, I believe US's stance will not change either. Have a great day: )
