Fiji Island-Germany Combo for COP23 |

It is quite usually not to be certain about the next host of the COP during by the first week of every COP but this was the case at the ongoing COP22 in Marrakech. It was clear and well-known that Asia will host the next Conference of Parties but the host nation was yet to come through. By the end of the first week, information emerged that the COP23 will be hosted at the UNFCCC headquarters in Bonn, Germany with Fiji Islands to co-chair. The Fiji bid to co-chair the COP 23 is seen as a big statement by the small island developing states(SIDS) and has the support of the Asia Pacific nations. I was really surprised that heavyweights in Asia such as China, Singapore, India, Japan and South Korea, were not forthcoming however, I learned from some sources that one of the Asian Tigers intends to host in 2018. The COP 22 in Morocco is the second time the North African country will be hosting the conference having first done so in 2001 when she hosted the COP7. There are also strong arguments on the hosting of COP with some favouring developing countries to do so as it will offer a physical experience of the real effects of climate change to a large number of participants at the same time. However, official announcement is being awaited from the UNFCCC possibly before the end of the week to confirm this and with the rights of co-chair handed to Fiji for the 23rd session of the Conference of Parties. Even though Fiji is really small they're doing a very good job in what environment concerns!
