Zero Waste and Circular Economy

by Dewi Retno S | 14-11-2016 11:02 recommendations 0

On Monday, October 31st 2016 I attend a guest lecture about Zero Waste. The speaker were Mrs. Warma (also head of Environmental Engineering Department in ITS), Prof. Paul Connet, and Mr. Froilan Grate.

First, Mrs. Warma began the lecture with brief explanations about waste management in Surabaya and also opened the guest lecture. And then Prof. Paul Connet began his explanations about Circular Economy. In circular economy, we need to do composting, reuse, and recycle. So, we make the waste become the resources.

-

There are 10 steps to Zero Waste according to Prof. Connet:

  1. Source separation (separate the waste in the source)
  2. Door to door collection
  3. Composting (compost food waste and use it to fertilize the farm and garden)
  4. Recycling
  5. Reuse and repair center
  6. Zero waste research center (recruit professor, student, designer to work with communities and NGOs to study fraction that can?t be reused, recycled, and composted)
  7. Better industrial design
  8. Reduce the throw away products and packages
  9. Residual separation facility
  10. Interim landfill

Third, Mr. Grate began his explanations about how Philippines applied Zero Waste Program in 250 villages. Their program focused on waste management in source, which is separation. And the waste will be managed in village. Not only reducing the waste, this program also increased the income of the villagers and save the money for waste transportation.

Thanks for sharing, Dewi! I also have heard the concept of 'zero waste' several times, but it is really hard to practice in daily life. I guess it is important to make it a habit, and the nation should also focus on developing waste management skills. Have a great day: )

More n more companies globally need to come forward and implement the principles of circular economy. I recently read that Google, one of the latest mega-corporations, is going to commit to the principles of a circular economy(one that keeps 'technical nutrients' like plastic and silicon out of the landfill, and trims out wasted water, energy, food, and land). Thanks for sharing.
