First and foremost I would like to apologize for the late report. This is because I was chosen among the best 4 students in my university from a pool of over 200 applicants to be part of the Nile Fellows Team which aims at the sustainability of the Nile River which is the longest River in the world. The gathering took place in Egypt and so I got a chance to not only visit Egypt but also to navigate the Nile and see how human activities are really degrading the Nile. All the riparian states are fighting for the Nile and they all want to have a higher benefit from it and yet there is a lot of water in the Nile basin watersheds. So being part of the leaders, we ought to ensure the environmental health and sustainability of the Nile River. I will write a report to tell you more about what is happening along this Nile. Getting back to the main topic, I would say there has been lots of events in 2016, and to me it has been a great year as far as looking for environmental solutions is concerned. And to me personally, it has been a challenging year but it?s out of the challenges that I have been enriched with a lot of knowledge, leadership skills, and boosted my esteem.
However there are some events that need more attention in 2017 because the New Year comes with new strategies.
Strengthening environmental sanctions, these can be imposed on countries or organizations that are directly or indirectly affecting the environment, and these should be strictly followed come 2017. There is need to fight determinedly for the future. For example china?s decision to halt coal imports from North Korea for three weeks in line with the latest United Nations Sanctions against the Hermit state. These are some of the sanctions against China and expecting a lot more in 2017.
Increasing awareness among children and involving them more in creative thinking and innovative ideas. Because I think children have a lot more to offer. Also creating youth forums and involving university students because these have a lot of innovations that can be friendly to the environment and reduce on the unfriendly ways of doing things that affect the environment.
Increasing public awareness in all communities. People are still ignorant about the impacts of some human activities because they only aim at the present and they ignore what might happen to the future.
I would then like to wish the Tunza Eco-generation family a happy New Year 2017.
And to all communities that have the culture of burning things and tyres on the New Year Eve, this is not right for the environment.
Let?s welcome the New Year in Healthy environments.
