Some years later, the population in Les Cayes ride bicycles and the majority of people included children, young and adult could ride a least a bicycle. But with the  technology evolution the transportation way has been changing and motorcycles and cars have replaced bicycle in the region , otherwise some of them were  still using.

About four years ago, young people in Les Cayes ( Region located in the South of Haiti) have taken an initiative to revalorize bicycle in the region. In order to reduce the gaz  emission  which can cause greenhouse effect, they   have started by sensibilize people, asked them to restart using their bicycles. They organized a manifestation where some people have taken a bicycle and rided from Les Cayes to Gelé (A little town in the South Country). This action has grew up and each yeah it becames a tradition for people in the south to ride bicycle on January 2, named in our history ?Elders day?. After 2 years it has considered as national event and people all over the country come to participate. It?s a time for tourists to visit there and participate also.

This year, the fourth edition called ?Okay sou Bekàn? with the catchword ? Pedal for reforestation?. That is coming after the hurricane Mathew which has destroyed the South of the country. A lot of people included Children, adult and older from all over the country were coming to participate, collaborate with south people to cure this situation. Some personalities like the Haitian elected president, some senators, mayors , journalists  etc have taken part in that. The main goals of this event this are to motivate people to the way that they can prevent natural catastrophes, to reforest the region affected by the hurricane Mathew and the global goal is to reduce greenhouse gaz effect emission. It?s why the majority  people in the event has received an seedling specially fruit trees to plant .

This fourth event was considered as big sign to other people in the country how they can work to preserve the environment especially by reforesting the country which has about 2 %  forest coverage. In fact, this is a traditional event each January 2, where every people take their bicycle and ride it from somewhere to go somewhere else. This event promise to come with one term related to the environement protection each year.

?Okay sou bekàn ? : It?s Haitian Language and it means population in Les Cayes who rides bicycle at the same time in one day.

Where students can use bikes to get to different destination for example moving from one college to another, to and from the library , from there hostels and homes. WOW! It's so inspiring to see that a small but thoughtful environmental movement of promoting bike riding has grown so big that it is observed/followed annually at national level. I like the this year's caption 'Pedal for reforestation'. Bicycling is safe for environment as well as our health. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed, promoting Bicycle riding is excellent way of checking carbon emissions. 2% forest coverage needs to be improved. Afforestation must be encouraged by such events.
