Camel is not only the national animal of UAE, but it is one of the most prominent tourist attraction. It is commonly said if you visit Dubai, your trip cannot be complete without Desert Safari and camel ride. But I am also sorry to mention that inspite of so many cleanliness campaigns some people behave inappropriately towards keeping the camel?s abode i.e desert, clean. People do desert camping, enjoy the surroundings but they forget to pick up the plastic left overs, bottles, etc. Hundreds of camels die each year from ingesting plastic bags left behind in the desert.
As per Vet Doctor Wernery, rocks of calcified plastic weighing up to 60 kilograms are found in camel stomachs every day during the post-mortems in his clinic.
Wernery said the curious animals nibble on plastic bags that are thrown from car windows or dumped in the desert by campers and day-trippers.
The animals ingest plastic bags and ropes which then calcify in their stomach. The heavy rocks or balls fill up the stomach and make it impossible for the animals to eat, causing them to eventually die of starvation. To make the situation worse camel calves are worst affected.
Few days back I had participated in desert clean up drive by Emirates Environment Group where I actually noticed piles of plastics , broken glasses, cigarette butts, bottles and synthetic ropes. Near to the place, herds of camel were passing by. Fortunately they were escorted by few local men to a safer place.
There were hundreds of volunteers including me and we all collected so much plastic waste and bottles that I could notice that our bags were over filled. Thanks to Environment agencies and groups for organizing such clean up campaigns on a larger scale, otherwise the situation would have been beyond control and our camels would have been categorized as endangered animals.
This is the time to call for an end to this fatal pollution . Revelers must stop polluting the desert with plastic.

Hi manav, I also had a fun time riding a camel when i visited Egypt years ago! Doesn't it make you feel like you're going to fall down when they stand up? I always felt that way.. Anyhow, i didn't think they would eat almost anything like the plastic bags. It's very similar to what's happening to the turtles isn't it? Thanks for your great work, and keep us noticed of later events!

It's terrible that hundreds of camels die each year from ingesting plastic bags left behind in the desert.

Wow, that's a pretty interesting article, Manav. Sincerely, i'd never had thought that this could be happening with deserts at some place in the world. Plastic is a truly problem for all animals due to its compounds and its consequences. Hope people can raise awarness on this issue. Greetings from Dominican Republic.

Thanks for sharing, Manav! I feel so sad to hear camels are suffering from plastic waste that the tourists leave behind. I believe the nation, or the business should make educational programs that are compulsory for desert tourism.

Responsible Disposal of Garbage & specially plastic is a must. Dubai Municipality has recently introduced camera & drone monitoring of deserts. We hope this menace will end soon. Thanks Manav.

It is really sad that some people behave some ir-responsibly and throw all kinds of litter around in the desert which is consumed by these innocent camels and becomes cause of their illness or death in extreme cases. It's so nice of you and other volunteers to participate in 'Desert Clean up' and make it safe for camels. But such clean ups are a reactive solution to the problem or rather 'damage control'. As a permanent solution, everyone has to change his/her attitude and be compassionate towards animals and dispose their litter mindfully in proper bins. Thanks for the well written report, Manav.

Government or local community can deploy some persons whose job will be to clean up the parts of the desert. Those persons will be deployed on a contract of giving salary every month. So they will do their jobs accurately as they will get monthly salary. It will result to a clean desert which will save the camels. If you think you can propose this idea to any political or community leader then go for it. Best of luck

Dear Manav, its definitely saddening to hear how the national animals cum most prominent tourism animal Camel are dying due to ingestion of calcified plastic rocks. But on the other hand its so good to see the energy of youths like you who conduct desert clean up and awareness campaigns on volunteer basis. Keep up this great work. Green Cheers!
