Recycling is one of good ways to save our Planet. It is also implemented by Starbucks in term of their coffee grounds. By the way, if I'm writing about this well-known coffee shop, it doesn't mean I am promoting them. I just admire how they do little things to care more this Mother Earth. :)
I was curious with a kind of small "advertisement" on top of Starbucks' desk where all sugar, straws, tissue papers, trash bins etc were placed. It is said that you can ask for coffee grounds for your garden and it's for FREE. Barista Ronny was very informative in explaining to me about their free-give-away "powder cake". Yes! They call those coffee grounds as "powder cake". It comes from coffee machine. Once the machine is full, then you have to trash the powder cake into the garbage bin and then it becomes the landfill waste.
But, Starbucks comes up with the idea to make composts out of this powder cake. You just need to scatter the powder cake on the soil of your plants and let it fertilize your garden. So simple but you're helping Mother Earth with adding vitamins from the powder cake.
What I got last night was a pack of powder cake out of Espresso coffee. Barista Ronny explained that every shot of Espresso, it will make 18 - 24 grams of powder cake from the coffee extractions through water. However, its life span is only 2 days for the powder cake to still have those vitamins and other useful elements for the plants.
So, this morning I began my fertilizing work with that Starbucks powder cake. I scattered it around the root of my lime tree and green vegetables. It added a good smell in my garden.
I also used about 2 teaspoons of the powder cake to make a face mask. I combined it with lime juice to make a paste (you can use baby oil as a substitute to the lime juice), then I covered my face with it. Once it started to dry, I scrubbed my face gently until the mask went off. The result was surprisingly great ! I got a smoother and brighter skin ! And it's all because of the powder cake that people usually just trash it to the garbage bin. You also can use it for body scrub, but you need more than 2 teaspoons of powder cake.
It's really nice to save the Earth with this cool way that Starbucks introduces to us. It reduces the landfill waste and supports environmental health. Let's love our Earth.

Hello Particia! Thanks for sharing interesting article:)
I found many coffee shops trying to recycle the coffee grounds as air freshener, but not many people liked or used it. In that sense, I'm glad to hear alternative(and better!) way to reuse them as fertilizer! I want to go check starbucks nearby right now and see if they have it.
Thanks again!

Lovely report Patricia. Big brand like Starbucks is praiseworthy for spreading awareness towards the environment amongst its customers.

It's great when such big brands understand their social and environmental responsibility and do such campaigns to educate their customers and contribute towards environment. Thanks for the way you've written this report in a very inspiring manner, putting in your extra dose of passion and self-experimentation to convince us to use powder cake. Loved reading it.

Patricia, thank you for your report. I have seen that small ad few times in Starbucks, but never asked them. I don't know why, but after reading your article, I thought I should have done it before! Making coffee and helping earth with coffee grounds seem to be helpful. I should ask them for one too. Thank you for letting me know!
