Nuclear Power?

In conjunction with Earth Day, the problem about environmental protection is highlighted as it poses to overcome all problems concerning conflicts, injustice, pollution, war, poverty, and injustice. The source of power is very important as to fulfil the demands of energy although it may defect the environment. The practice of nuclear power has become a global trend as numerous developed nations have been using it for many years now to encounter the ever increasing demand for energy in their nations.

Malaysia as a developing country will surely benefit from such technology. From what the public comprehend, nuclear power is the use of nuclear reactions that release nuclear energy to generate heat, which then is used in steam turbines to produce electricity. However, many also understand that the use of nuclear-based energy has special dangers, especially to the well-being and protection of people and the environment. Such uncertainties and risks must be completely taken into account, cautiously examined as well as managed professionally. The public must receive clear explanations as to the profits of nuclear power and requires guarantees of its safety.

In this vast developing world, the nuclear power all around the globe has improved. New proposed designs will offer better safety and performance, though would not guarantee if it will be built and operated properly. Life-threatening effects can still happen if its construction and management do not adhere to the plan.

Based on history, the engineers and designers of the nuclear reactors in Fukushima, Japan did not prepare for the possibilities of an earthquake and it ended tragically in 2011 with all three cores largely melted in the first three days. Also, there are other numerous accidents that humans have not prepare that causes radiation leak, zone of alienation and etc.

All these must be taken into consideration before implementing such technology in Malaysia. The government must make sure that we have enough expertise to handle nuclear power. The government must also guarantee that we have appropriate facilities and sufficient man power to deal with any possible scenario arising from using nuclear power. We also must to set up a specialised agency that can constantly monitor the use of nuclear power.

The connection with international agencies and experts is also crucial. A legal framework and comprehensive regulatory for nuclear power agenda must be put in place. It must cover the principles of security, control, safety, responsibility, sustainable development, compensation, compliance, international cooperation, control, and others. It is also vital for the government to assess in detail nuclear energy activities and their strategies for the future development so that the laws are adequate and relevant.

At the same time, Malaysia must consider venturing into more environmentally friendly and safer power such as solar, wind, by recycling or reusing waste disposal and others that are comparatively low in risk, cost and also easier to manage.

HI Hafidz, every technology has it's own positives and negatives, though venturing into cleaner technologies such as solar and wind would have long term benefits. I remember hearing that there is a lot of turbulence when we fly over Malaysia and Indonesia. From what is heard, I assume Malaysia is a region of high speed winds? If I'm right, then wind energy would be the best alternative.

Muhammed, thank you for your report. Well said that nuclear power has pros and cons. I agree with you that raising public awareness is as much important as developing and using nuclear power. I think it would be worth trying to write a report about public awareness on nuclear power.

Hi Muhammed! Thanks for sharing great report on nuclear power and its danger.
After Japan's incident, public became more conscious about potential danger posed by nulcear energy. Were their any social movements or actions regarding nuclear power in Malaysia?
    Thanks for sharing again!
